The baffle is part of the acoustic design

A ceiling speaker in open plenum behaves differently from the same speaker in a sealed back box. Enclosures control the rear volume, which affects low-frequency response, and they contain sound that would otherwise cross into the next room through the plenum — which in offices, clinics and classrooms is a privacy matter as much as an audio one.

Fire and plenum requirements

Where a ceiling is a return-air plenum, enclosures and the speakers inside them have to meet the relevant fire rating, and a UL-listed enclosure may be required by code rather than preferred. Confirm the ceiling construction before ordering — this is not a field substitution.

Vandal resistance

Stainless recessed and surface enclosures with vandal-proof baffles are specified for corridors, detention, transit and anywhere public access reaches the speaker. They are ordered as a matched set with the baffle, not separately.
