Wattage rating is not a volume setting

An attenuator is sized to the total wattage of the speakers on the circuit it controls, not to how loud the room should be. An attenuator under-rated for its load will overheat and fail, and it usually fails in a way that takes the zone silent.

Total the taps on the circuit, then choose the next rating up.

Priority override is the one that matters

A standard attenuator lets an occupant turn a zone down — including down to nothing. If that zone carries emergency paging or evacuation announcements, that is a serious problem, and in many jurisdictions it is not permitted.

Priority attenuators pass an override signal that restores full level for a page regardless of the local setting. Where a zone carries life-safety announcements, the priority model is a requirement rather than an upgrade. Confirm with the AHJ.

Where to put them

In-wall Decora models suit occupant-adjustable areas; rack-mount models keep control with facilities where occupants should not have it. That choice is a policy decision as much as a technical one.
