What is a SCIF, and what makes AV design different inside one?
A SCIF — Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, pronounced "skiff" — is an accredited area constructed and operated so that Sensitive Compartmented Information can be stored, discussed, processed, and displayed inside it without being accessible from outside. Accreditation is granted by a designated accrediting authority against Intelligence Community Directive 705 and its technical specification, and can be revoked if the space is modified without approval.
AV is unusually difficult inside one because nearly every normal AV behavior is what the facility exists to prevent: capturing audio, transporting signals across boundaries, connecting to networks, radiating electromagnetic energy, and reaching manufacturer cloud services by default.
Five constraints recur on every secure-space AV project: acoustic isolation (loudspeakers and duct penetrations work against the sound transmission requirement); controlled boundary penetrations (every cable through the boundary is a reviewed item); emanations-aware equipment selection and cable routing; strict network enclave separation with no bridging; and portable electronic device policy, which generally rules out wireless microphones, wireless presentation, and Bluetooth peripherals.
The Room Where the Normal AV Answer Is the Wrong One

Most AV failures in accredited spaces are not security incidents. They are schedule and budget failures — a system designed to commercial norms, presented to a security officer late, and then substantially redesigned. Wireless microphones removed. Penetration count reduced. A room system swapped for equipment that will not attempt to reach a vendor cloud. Loudspeaker placement changed because the original layout compromised the acoustic boundary.
All of that is avoidable by involving AV at schematic, alongside the security consultant and the architect, and by designing to the constraints from the first drawing rather than defending a commercial design against them.

What is a SCIF?
SCIF stands for Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. It is an accredited area — a room, a suite, or an entire building — constructed and operated so that Sensitive Compartmented Information can be stored, discussed, processed, and displayed inside it without being accessible from outside. Accreditation is granted by a designated accrediting authority against Intelligence Community Directive 705 and its technical specification.
A SCIF is not simply a secure room. It is a room whose physical construction, acoustic isolation, access control, and technical emanations characteristics have been inspected and formally accredited, and whose accreditation can be revoked if it is modified without approval.
What does SCIF stand for and how is it pronounced?
Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. It is pronounced "skiff." You will also encounter SAPF (Special Access Program Facility) for special access programs, and open storage area for accredited spaces at other classification levels. The AV design constraints are broadly similar across all three.
Why does AV matter so much in a SCIF?
Because almost everything AV does is exactly what a SCIF is built to prevent. AV systems capture audio, transport signals, connect to networks, radiate electromagnetic energy, and frequently phone home to a manufacturer cloud. Every one of those behaviors is a potential accreditation problem. A conference room AV system installed without security review is one of the fastest ways to jeopardize an accreditation.
Can you install AV in an accredited space?

What are the main AV design constraints in a SCIF?
Five recur on every project. Acoustic isolation — the room must meet a sound transmission requirement, and loudspeakers, ducts, and penetrations all work against it. Penetrations — every cable through the boundary is a controlled item requiring approved treatment. Electronic emanations — equipment selection and cable routing affect the technical security posture. Network separation — AV endpoints must respect the enclave boundaries and never bridge them. Portable electronic device policy — which frequently rules out the wireless presentation and BYOD features users expect.
Can we use wireless microphones or wireless presentation in a SCIF?
Usually not, and it is one of the first expectations to reset. Wireless microphones, wireless presentation, Bluetooth peripherals, and cellular-connected devices are generally incompatible with an accredited space's emanations and PED policies. Design accordingly from the beginning: wired microphone systems, wired presentation inputs, and control paths that do not depend on a wireless link. Discovering this at installation is expensive.
What about video conferencing inside a secure space?
It is routinely done, on the accredited network for the classification level involved, with equipment selected and configured so it cannot reach anything outside that enclave. The failure mode to design out is a codec or room system with a default path to a manufacturer cloud service. Endpoints are configured to reach only the authorized infrastructure, with unused services disabled and the configuration documented for the accreditation package.
How do you handle multiple classification levels in one facility?
By physical and logical separation, not by software policy. Sources at different levels do not share switching infrastructure, do not share cable pathways where the standard requires separation, and are visually distinguished at every operator position so a user cannot confuse them. Where a single display must show different levels at different times, the switching and its controls are part of the accreditation discussion, not an afterthought.
When should AV get involved in a SCIF project?
At schematic, alongside the security consultant and the architect — not after the walls are up. AV drives penetration counts, affects acoustic performance, and determines equipment that has to be reviewed. Projects that bring AV in late routinely pay for rework in both construction and schedule.
What documentation do you provide for accreditation?
Equipment lists with make, model, and firmware; signal flow and cable schedules showing every boundary penetration; network topology showing enclave separation; device configuration baselines with unused services disabled; and country-of-origin and NDAA Section 889 attestation for every component.
