LECTURE CAPTURE SYSTEMS

Lecture Capture Systems —
Every Lecture Recorded. Nobody Operating a Camera.

Creation Networks designs and installs lecture capture systems for colleges and universities: cameras, microphones, capture hardware, scheduling, and captioning workflows that feed the video platform your campus already uses. Our CTS-D certified engineers build capture into the room standard so recording is automatic, audio is clear, and faculty never touch a production switcher.

Quick answer

What is lecture capture?

Lecture capture is the automatic recording of a class session, including the instructor, audio, and presentation content, so students can review it later. Creation Networks designs lecture capture systems for colleges and universities using room cameras, microphones, a capture appliance or encoder, and scheduling integration that publishes recordings to platforms such as Panopto, Kaltura, Echo360, or YuJa.

A reliable system records every scheduled class without the instructor starting it, produces audio students can understand, and supports captions for accessibility. Shop Extron SMP streaming media processors or request a quote.

Lecture Capture Systems Built to Run Without Faculty Involvement

Lecture capture succeeds or fails on adoption. If faculty have to start it, check it, and troubleshoot it, they stop using it, and the recordings students need disappear.

Our design target is automatic capture. The room knows the class schedule, starts and stops recording on its own, and publishes to your video platform with the right title and course. The instructor teaches and never touches a recorder.

That requires the capture chain to be reliable end to end: cameras that frame the presenter without an operator, audio that stays clear when the instructor moves, content capture from the room computer or laptop, and monitoring that tells you when a room has stopped recording. Our programming team builds the control and scheduling logic, and remote monitoring watches it.

How It Works

How Does a Lecture Capture System Work?

Every lecture capture system, whatever the brand, has the same five links.

  1. Video sourceA room camera or instructor tracking camera captures the presenter and board.
  2. Audio sourceInstructor wireless microphone and, where students speak, ceiling microphones with echo cancellation.
  3. Content sourceSlides and demonstrations from the room computer, instructor laptop, or document camera.
  4. Capture applianceAn encoder or processor mixes the sources into a recording, such as the Extron SMP series, or software on a room PC.
  5. Platform and scheduleThe recording publishes to Panopto, Kaltura, Echo360, YuJa, or your LMS, triggered by the course schedule.

Audio

Why Is Audio the Most Important Part of Lecture Capture?

Students will tolerate a plain picture of a lecture and will not tolerate unintelligible audio. If the microphone picks up room echo, HVAC noise, or only the front of the room, the recording is not useful regardless of camera quality.

We pair an instructor wireless microphone with a ceiling array where students speak, process it with DSP for echo and noise control, and feed one clean mix to the recorder. At the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, new audio processing and wireless microphones significantly improved speech intelligibility in a large lecture classroom. Approaches

Hardware or Software Lecture Capture: Which Fits Your Campus?

Both approaches record lectures. They differ in cost per room, reliability, and how much IT supports.

Approach How it works Best fit
Hardware appliance A dedicated encoder in the room rack records and publishes independently of the room PC. Large campuses and lecture halls where reliability and central management matter.
Software on the room PC Capture software runs on the room computer and records its screen, camera, and microphone. Smaller rooms and pilots where the room PC is already standardized.
Camera and conferencing recording The room's Zoom or Teams system records sessions, often for HyFlex rooms. Hybrid rooms already built around a conferencing platform.
Not sure? Our AV consulting team can pilot both in representative rooms before you standardize.
Accessibility

How Do You Caption Lecture Capture Recordings?

Captioned recordings are an accessibility requirement for public colleges and a benefit for every student.

Captioning is added through your video platform's automated captioning, a human captioning service for accommodations, or live captioning for real-time sessions. We design the capture chain so audio quality supports accurate captions, and we integrate with the platform your disability services office already uses. See our ADA AV compliance guide for schools and universities.

Scale

How Do You Scale Lecture Capture to Hundreds of Rooms?

Scaling capture is a standardization and monitoring problem more than a hardware problem.

We build one capture standard per room type, tie each room's recorder to the course schedule, and monitor every room centrally so a failed recording is a ticket instead of a student complaint. Consistent hardware makes spares interchangeable, and consistent programming makes support predictable. See university AV integration.

Lecture Capture FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Lecture Capture Systems

Answers to the questions instructional technology teams, disability services staff, and faculty ask most often about lecture capture design. Written by our CTS-D certified AV design engineers.

How does lecture capture work?

A camera, microphones, and content source feed a capture appliance or software that records the class and publishes it to your video platform on a schedule. See lecture capture systems.

What equipment does a lecture capture room need?

A camera, instructor and room microphones, a capture appliance or software recorder, a content source, and scheduling integration. Shop Extron SMP processors and auto-tracking cameras.

Does lecture capture work with Panopto, Kaltura, Echo360, or YuJa?

Yes. We design capture to feed the platform your campus licenses.

Can lecture capture start automatically?

Yes. We integrate with the course schedule so rooms start and stop recording on their own.

How do you caption recorded lectures?

Through automated captioning, human captioning, or live captioning, supported by clean audio. ADA AV compliance.

Can you add lecture capture to existing classrooms?

Usually yes, by adding a camera, microphones, and a capture appliance to the existing room.

How do you monitor hundreds of lecture capture rooms?

Remote monitoring reports each room's recorder, camera, and microphone status centrally. Clarity remote monitoring.

How much does lecture capture cost per room?

It depends on camera count, microphone coverage, and capture hardware. We provide a budgetary range at assessment.
