HYFLEX & HYBRID CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY

HyFlex Classroom Technology —
In-Person and Online Students, One Class.

Creation Networks designs and installs HyFlex and hybrid classroom technology for community colleges, universities, and K-12 schools: instructor tracking cameras, ceiling microphones, displays for remote students, and one-touch control. Our CTS-D certified engineers build rooms that serve students in the room, students joining live, and students watching later, without asking the instructor to run a production.

Quick answer

What is a HyFlex classroom?

A HyFlex classroom is a teaching space that lets each student choose to attend in person, join the live class online, or watch a recording later, with the same course experience in every mode. The HyFlex model was described by Brian Beatty at San Francisco State University. Creation Networks designs the room technology that makes it work: instructor camera, room microphones, remote student display, content sharing, and recording, all started from one touch panel.

The four technology needs are two-way audio, video of the instructor and content for remote students, video of remote students for the room, and recording. We build these into a repeatable room standard for community colleges, universities, and K-12 schools. Request a quote or see lecture capture systems.

HyFlex Classroom Technology That Does Not Make the Instructor a Producer

The measure of a HyFlex room is whether an instructor can teach a normal class in it. If the instructor has to manage cameras, switch scenes, and watch a chat window, the room has failed.

Good HyFlex design removes production work from the instructor. The camera tracks without an operator, microphones pick up students and the instructor without anyone handing around a mic, remote students appear on a display where the instructor can see them, and one touch starts the meeting, the camera, and the recording together.

Most failures are audio failures. Remote students tolerate a soft picture and abandon a class they cannot hear, so we design microphone coverage and echo cancellation first and cameras second. Read our blog guides on hybrid classroom best practices and navigating the era of hybrid education.

Components

What Equipment Does a HyFlex Classroom Need?

Camera • Audio • Display • Control • Recording

📹

Instructor Tracking Camera

An auto-tracking PTZ or AI camera follows the instructor and frames the board, so remote students see the lesson without an operator. Shop auto-tracking camera room bundles.

🎤

Ceiling Microphone Array

Picks up the instructor and students from the ceiling, with beamforming and echo cancellation so no one passes a microphone. Biamp ceiling array microphones.

Remote Student Display

A display at the front or side of the room that shows online students, placed so the instructor can look at them naturally.

What Is the Difference Between HyFlex and Hybrid Learning?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different promises to the student.

Model Student choice What the room must support
HyFlex Students choose in person, live online, or recorded, course by course or day by day. All three modes at once: two-way audio, tracking camera, remote student display, and recording.
Hybrid (blended) The instructor assigns which sessions are in person and which are online. Strong in-person AV, plus a good online path for the sessions that go remote.
Online (synchronous) All students join live remotely. Instructor studio or room with camera and microphone for delivery.
Cost and scope. HyFlex rooms cost more than a standard classroom because of tracking cameras and ceiling microphones. We provide a budgetary range at assessment, so you can decide how many rooms to convert first.
Audio

Why Does HyFlex Audio Matter More Than Video?

In a HyFlex room, remote students depend on the microphone for everything. If the instructor walks away from a lectern microphone or a student asks a question from the third row, a poorly designed room goes silent for the online audience.

We cover the whole room with ceiling microphone arrays, use DSP echo cancellation and mix-minus so remote participants do not hear themselves, and tune the system to the room. See classroom audio systems and the UC Davis case study, where Biamp echo cancellation and Shure wireless microphones support in-person and hybrid learning.

Rollout

How Do You Roll HyFlex Out Across a Campus?

Most campuses convert rooms in waves, so a repeatable design matters.

  1. Pick the first roomsChoose rooms by enrollment demand and instructor readiness.
  2. Set one HyFlex standardDefine camera, microphone, display, and control layout once.
  3. Install and commissionTest audio in both directions and recording end to end.
  4. Train and supportTrain faculty, then monitor rooms remotely and add more rooms as demand grows.

HyFlex Classroom FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — HyFlex Classroom Technology

Answers to the questions instructional technology teams and faculty ask most often about HyFlex and hybrid classroom design. Written by our CTS-D certified AV design engineers.

What does HyFlex mean?

HyFlex is short for hybrid flexible: students choose to attend in person, join live online, or watch later. See HyFlex classroom technology.

What technology does a HyFlex classroom need?

An instructor tracking camera, ceiling microphones with echo cancellation, a display for remote students, a conferencing platform, recording, and one-touch control.

Is HyFlex good for all students?

It gives students choice, which helps those who work or commute, but it also requires strong audio and an instructor comfortable teaching to two audiences. Room technology removes the technical barrier.

How much does HyFlex classroom technology cost?

Cost depends on room size, number of cameras and microphones, and whether cabling exists. HyFlex rooms cost more than a standard classroom because of tracking cameras and ceiling microphones. We provide a budgetary range at the assessment stage.

Can you convert an existing classroom to HyFlex?

Usually yes. We add a tracking camera, ceiling microphones, a remote student display, and updated control, reusing the existing display and switching where suitable.

Does HyFlex work with Zoom, Teams, Webex, or Google Meet?

Yes. We standardize on the platform your campus uses. See Microsoft Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms.

How do you caption HyFlex classes?

Captioning is built into the conferencing and recording workflow so live and recorded sessions are accessible. ADA AV compliance.

What support do HyFlex rooms need?

Monitoring of cameras and microphones, plus faculty training. Education AV support services.
