Empty rack spaces are not neutral. An open gap in the rack front lets hot exhaust air recirculate to the intakes above it, which is the single most common thermal mistake in AV racks. Blank and vent panels close those gaps and steer the airflow deliberately. Do I really need to blank empty rack spaces?

Yes. An open gap is a short circuit for air: hot exhaust from the rear of the rack flows straight through it and back into the intake of the device above. Blanking is the cheapest thermal improvement available to a rack.

When should I use a vent panel instead of a blank?

Use a vent panel where you want air to enter or leave the rack front at that point — typically low in the rack for intake, or in front of passively cooled gear. Use solid blanks everywhere else so the airflow follows the path you designed.

What is a light-blocking vent panel for?

Studios, theaters, houses of worship and control rooms often need the room dark. VTB panels pass air through a baffled path that blocks equipment LED light from escaping into the room.

What is the difference between HBL and EB blanks?

HBL is a flat panel that sits flush with the rack rail; EB is a flanged econo blank, a lower-cost option for filling large numbers of empty spaces. Both do the same thermal job; the difference is finish and price.

Should I buy contract packs?

If you are building more than a handful of racks, yes — contract packs cut the per-panel cost and mean you are not short two blanks on the last rack at 4pm on install day.
