What is a lacer bar and why do I need one?

A lacer bar spans the rack rails behind the equipment and gives you something to tie cable to. Without it, cable weight hangs on the connectors and every bundle sits wherever gravity put it. With it, each run is dressed, supported and traceable.

Straight or offset lacer bars?

Offset bars sit further back from the rail, which is what you want behind deep equipment or where connectors protrude — the bar clears the plugs instead of fighting them. Straight bars are fine in shallower racks.

Does cable dressing really affect cooling?

Substantially. A dense mat of undressed cable across the rear of a rack is a physical barrier to the exhaust path. Racks that run hot for no apparent reason very often have a cable problem rather than a fan problem.

What is a cable chase for?

It creates a vertical pathway inside the rack frame so bundles can travel between rack spaces without crossing the equipment area. In multi-bay rows it is what keeps inter-rack cabling out of the airflow.

Should I use velcro or zip ties?

Velcro for anything that will be changed, which in AV is most things. Zip ties over-tightened on Cat6 or fiber deform the cable and change its performance, and they have to be cut to make any modification.
