Middle Atlantic Rack Cooling & Fans

Fan tops, quiet fan panels, thermostatic controllers and fan doors — thermal management engineered for the rack, not bolted onto it.

Heat is what kills rack equipment, and in AV it arrives from amplifiers, matrix switchers, UPS units and video processors that were never designed for a sealed cabinet. Middle Atlantic's thermal line is built around the frames themselves: integrated fan tops matched to BGR, ERK, AXS and WRK racks, QFP and UQFP quiet fan panels for rooms where noise matters, FAN2-DC and other DC fan kits, fan controllers with thermostatic and display options, and fan doors for enclosed cabinets.

What Is in This Collection

  • Integrated Fan Tops — BGR, ERK, AXS and WRK fan tops rated by CFM and matched to the frame footprint.
  • Quiet Fan Panels — QFP and UQFP rack-mount panels, including versions with a temperature display.
  • DC Fan Kits — FAN2-DC and similar low-noise DC fan assemblies with power supplies.
  • Fan Controllers — standalone and rack-mount thermostatic controllers that run fans only when needed.
  • Fan Doors — door-mounted fan assemblies for enclosed cabinets and server-style racks.
  • Fan Accessories — cords, brackets, filters and replacement parts.

Why Rack Thermal Management Matters

  • Equipment life falls sharply above its rated intake temperature — heat is the main cause of premature failure
  • Thermostatic control means fans run when the rack is hot and stay silent when it is not
  • Quiet fan panels let equipment live in boardrooms, studios and classrooms without an audible hum
  • Fan tops matched to the frame exhaust through the intended path rather than fighting the rack
  • Filters keep dust off boards in workshop, gym and industrial environments
  • Cheap relative to the equipment it protects, and far cheaper than an intermittent thermal fault

Typical Applications

  • Amplifier-heavy racks in houses of worship, gyms and venues
  • Enclosed cabinets and credenzas with restricted airflow
  • Boardrooms and studios where noise is a design constraint
  • Closets and IDF rooms with no dedicated HVAC
  • Broadcast and control rooms running 24/7

Choosing a Cooling Approach

Approach Where It Mounts Noise Best Fit
Fan top Rack top Moderate Exhausting a full rack
Quiet fan panel Rack space Low Occupied rooms
Fan door Cabinet door Moderate Sealed cabinets
DC fan kit Various Low Credenzas, small enclosures
Thermostatic controller Rack space n/a Running fans only on demand

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a rack need active cooling?

Roughly speaking, once the load passes a few hundred watts in an enclosed rack, or whenever intake temperature at the top of the rack rises more than a few degrees above room ambient. Amplifiers, UPS units and video processors get there quickly.

Should fans push air in or pull it out?

The usual arrangement is intake low at the front and exhaust high at the rear or top, following the natural convection direction. Fighting convection with reversed fans produces hot pockets rather than cooling.

How do I keep fans from being audible in a quiet room?

Use quiet fan panels (QFP/UQFP) and a thermostatic controller so the fans idle or stop when the rack is cool. Larger, slower fans move the same air with far less noise than small fast ones.

What CFM do I need?

It depends on the total watts dissipated and the temperature rise you will accept. As a rule of thumb, a few hundred watts wants a low-CFM panel, and a kilowatt-plus rack needs a rated fan top. Send us the equipment list and we will size it.

Do I need filters?

In dusty environments — gyms, workshops, warehouses, kitchens — yes, along with a schedule to clean them. A clogged filter is worse than no filter, so only fit them where someone will maintain them.

Does blanking empty rack spaces really help?

Significantly. Unblanked gaps let hot exhaust recirculate to the intakes above. Fit blanks and vent panels before adding fans — see Middle Atlantic Rack Panels, Blanks & Vent Panels.
