Size by rail space and depth, then by access

Count the rack units the equipment actually needs and add headroom, because the rack is rarely revisited once the room is finished. Depth is the dimension people get wrong: an amplifier that fits the rail width may still not clear the rear door once cable bend radius is accounted for.

Wall or floor

Wall cabinets suit equipment rooms where floor space is scarce, and rotating or pivot frames let the rack swing out for rear access — which matters, because a wall rack bolted flat means every service visit is done blind. Floor racks suit larger systems and anything that needs airflow around it.

Thermal load is the specification people skip

Amplifiers in a sealed cabinet cook. Work out the heat load before choosing between a vented door, a fan kit or an open frame, and specify it at order rather than discovering the problem during commissioning. A rack that runs hot shortens the life of everything in it.
