Where do I start when specifying a Middle Atlantic rack?

Start with the equipment list. Total the rack units, add 20 to 30 percent for panels, power and growth, then measure the deepest device including connectors and cable bend to set the rack depth. Those two numbers point you at the right frame family, and the accessory categories above cover the rest.

What is the difference between a gangable and a stand-alone rack?

Gangable racks (MRK, BGR) bolt to each other so a row behaves as one structure and shares side panels between bays. Stand-alone racks (ERK, and SA-suffixed models) ship with both side panels and live on their own. Ganging saves panels and produces a straighter, more rigid rack line.

Do I need active cooling in my rack?

Once an enclosed rack passes a few hundred watts — which amplifiers, UPS units and matrix switchers reach quickly — yes. Before adding fans, blank every empty rack space, because unblanked gaps let hot exhaust recirculate straight back into the intakes above.
