Cambridge active and passive sound masking emitters — the small ceiling-mounted units that deliver the masking spectrum, plus paging and background music on the same device.

Active or passive

Active emitters carry their own amplification and connect over standard low-voltage cable in a daisy chain, which is what makes a Qt X system quick to install — no 70V distribution, no home runs, no speaker tapping. Passive emitters run from a central amplifier and suit installations where that infrastructure already exists.

For new work, active is almost always the answer. The labour saved on cabling outweighs the unit cost difference on anything above a small office.

Emitter layout

Emitters go on a grid across the ceiling rather than one per room, typically on a spacing set by ceiling height. Higher ceilings need wider spacing and fewer emitters for the same area; low ceilings need tighter spacing. That is why coverage is specified in square feet rather than rooms.

Plenum-rated and non-plenum versions exist, and above-ceiling installations in return-air plenums require the rated version by code. Confirm the ceiling construction before ordering.

Finishes

White and black to match the ceiling. In an exposed-structure ceiling the black version genuinely disappears where white does not.
