Draper ceiling-recessed projection screens install above the ceiling line and retract fully out of sight, leaving only a closure door visible when the screen is up. They are specified where the room has to read as a room rather than a presentation space — executive boardrooms, council chambers, hotel function rooms, multi-purpose halls and any space where a visible screen case would undercut the architecture.

Tensioned versus untensioned

Tensioned models hold the viewing surface flat with a side cable system. Untensioned screens hang from the roller alone and will develop waves at larger sizes, which shows up as visible distortion in the image, particularly on bright content and straight lines. Above roughly 100 inches diagonal, specify tensioned unless budget forces otherwise. Below that, an untensioned surface performs acceptably in most rooms.

Closure and finish

The closure door is what the room actually sees. Options run from standard white to custom-finish doors that can be painted or clad to match the surrounding ceiling. On a high-specification interior this is worth coordinating with the architect rather than defaulting — a mismatched door line is the detail people notice.

Surface selection

Matt White surfaces suit rooms with controlled light and wide seating. Grey surfaces raise perceived contrast where ambient light cannot be eliminated, at some cost in peak brightness. Acoustically transparent surfaces are required where loudspeakers sit behind the screen — a solid surface in that position degrades intelligibility no matter how capable the audio system is.

This is a construction item before it is a purchase

A recessed screen has to be framed into the ceiling, power and low-voltage control pulled to the case, and the drop calculated from finished ceiling height to the required image top — all before the ceiling closes. Structural capacity has to carry the case, and on larger screens that is not a trivial load. Retrofitting a recessed screen into a finished ceiling means opening it back up, which is why the surface-mounted range exists.
