Lens choice is a calculation

Throw ratio is the distance from lens to screen divided by image width. Work it backwards: measure the distance you actually have, decide the image width the room needs, divide, and that number tells you which lens. Choosing a projector before confirming a lens exists for the distance is the most common way a projector ends up in the wrong place.

Christie publishes the throw ratio in the lens name, which makes the shortlist quick. A 0.37:1 UST lens puts a large image on a wall from inches away; a 7.5:1 long throw reaches a stage from the back of a hall.

Lens shift matters as much as throw

A lens that reaches the right distance but cannot shift far enough vertically puts the image in the wrong place on the wall. In a finished ceiling that means moving the mount, which is expensive and visible. Check the shift range against the mounting height before ordering.

ILS and motorised control

Intelligent Lens System lenses carry motorised shift, zoom and focus with position memory, which matters for multi-projector blends and any installation where the projector is out of reach. For a single accessible projector, a manual lens is cheaper and does the same optical job.

No-lens bodies

Most Christie installation projectors ship without a lens precisely so the optic can be matched to the room. If you are specifying one of those, the lens is a required line item rather than an accessory — see the projector range.
