Why infrared rather than FM

Infrared light does not pass through walls. That is the entire point: in a courtroom, boardroom or any space handling confidential proceedings, an FM system can be received in the corridor or the car park, and an IR system cannot. Where privacy is a requirement rather than a preference, IR is the correct technology and often the only compliant one.

The trade is line of sight. Emitter placement has to cover every seat directly, and sunlight or certain LED lighting can interfere. Coverage is calculated from emitter output and room geometry, and large or oddly shaped rooms need multiple emitters driven from a modulator.

Specifying a system

Count the seats requiring receivers against the ADA guideline for the venue capacity, and confirm neck loops are included for telecoil users — that part is frequently missed at inspection.
