Product Overview
The Williams AV IR SY21 D is a large-area infrared assistive listening system that combines the Dante-equipped IR M1 D modulator with two IR E4 emitters, an IR A4 emitter array, and four WIR RX22-4N four-channel bodypack receivers. It targets mid-to-large venues such as houses of worship, council chambers, and auditoriums that need network-fed, ADA-compliant hearing assistance without the four-emitter footprint of the SY22 D. Chargers, earphones, and assistive listening signage are included for a deploy-ready package.
Product Description
The IR M1 D infrared modulator installs in one rack unit and takes program audio from two Dante network channels or from two combination XLR/quarter-inch TRS inputs that handle balanced or unbalanced line-level or microphone signals with selectable phantom power. In a networked AV system, the Dante input lets the assistive listening feed ride the same switch fabric as the rest of the room audio, with the analog inputs held in reserve for local or backup sources.
DSP-based processing inside the modulator applies selectable compression of 1:1, 1.5:1, or 2:1 plus high-pass and low-pass filtering, shaping the signal for speech intelligibility. Carrier frequencies are selectable between the 2.3/2.8 MHz and 3.3/3.8 MHz pairs, and the embedded web page handles configuration, the auto carrier shut-off timer, and diagnostics, including a 400 Hz internal test tone for commissioning. Front-panel quarter-inch jacks monitor both audio channels at the rack.
Infrared coverage comes from two IR E4 emitters and the IR A4 array, each fed by a single Cat5e home run from the modulator's RJ-45 ports carrying +48 VDC power, RS-485 control, and the baseband IR signal. With each emitter rated up to 18,000 square feet in single-channel mode, the SY21 D suits broad seating areas and rooms where the array fills a primary zone while the discrete emitters cover wings or under-balcony seats. The room's walls contain the infrared signal, so adjacent spaces stay interference-free and program audio remains private.
Each of the four WIR RX22-4N bodypack receivers offers four-channel selection, a dual-lens detector, and up to 60 hours on alkaline AA batteries, with two BAT KT6 dual-bay charger kits supplied for rechargeable operation. EAR 022 earphones and the IDP 008 ADA wall plaque complete the kit. Find additional receivers and neckloops in the Williams AV collection at Creation Networks, or step up to the four-emitter IR SY22 D for the largest rooms.
Key Features
- Dante-Integrated Modulator — The IR M1 D accepts two channels of Dante audio over the network, fitting directly into modern networked AV system designs.
- Balanced Coverage Package — Two IR E4 emitters plus the IR A4 array cover large venues efficiently, with each emitter rated up to 18,000 square feet in single-channel mode.
- Single Cat5e Per Emitter — Power, RS-485 control, and the IR baseband signal share one cable, so emitter positions need no electrical work.
- Four-Channel Bodypack Receivers — WIR RX22-4N units select among 2.3, 2.8, 3.3, and 3.8 MHz carriers for multi-program or multi-room receiver pooling.
- Long Receiver Runtime — Up to 60 hours on alkaline AA batteries, or 30 hours per charge on NiMH with the included dual-bay chargers.
- DSP Audio Conditioning — Selectable compression and filtering tailor program audio for listeners with hearing loss.
- Remote Web Configuration — Setup, monitoring, and carrier management are handled through the modulator's embedded web page.
- ADA Deployment Kit — Receivers, earphones, chargers, and IDP 008 signage are bundled to meet assistive listening compliance requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SY21 D differ from the SY22 D?
Both use the same IR M1 D modulator, IR A4 array, and WIR RX22-4N receivers. The SY21 D includes two IR E4 emitters where the SY22 D includes four, so the SY21 D is the right fit for venues that the array plus two emitters can cover.
Can I add emitters later if the room changes?
Yes. The IR M1 D provides four RJ-45 emitter ports, and additional IR E4 emitters connect over Cat5e. Coverage scales without replacing the head end.
Does Dante replace the analog inputs?
No. The two combination XLR/TRS inputs remain active alongside the Dante interface, so a local microphone or line source can feed the system when the network source is unavailable.
How many receivers does ADA compliance require?
Receiver counts scale with seating capacity under the ADA assistive listening tables. The four included WIR RX22-4N units cover small venues; additional receivers and hearing-aid-compatible neckloops can be added for larger capacities.
Is infrared appropriate for confidential meetings?
Yes. Infrared light is blocked by walls, so the transmitted audio cannot be received outside the room, which is why IR systems are commonly specified for courtrooms and government spaces.
What support and warranty come with the system?
Williams AV warrants the modulator and emitters for 2 years and the receivers for 5 years, with 90-day coverage on accessories. Creation Networks supplies replacement parts and accessories throughout the system's service life.
