Frequently Asked Questions — Video Processing, Extension & Distribution
Straight answers on HDBaseT extenders, matrix switchers, AV-over-IP encoders and decoders, and scalers for conference rooms, classrooms, campuses and venues.
Extender, matrix switcher or AV-over-IP?
An extender sends one source to one display over a long run. A matrix switcher routes several sources to several displays in one rack. AV-over-IP sends any source to any display across the network and scales to whole buildings. Room count and how often routing changes decide it.
When does AV-over-IP make sense?
When sources and displays are spread across many rooms or floors, when the system needs to grow, or when a building already has a capable network. Crestron DM NVX, LightWare, Visionary Solutions and AVPro Edge all offer AV-over-IP in this collection.
Does AV-over-IP need a special network?
It needs a managed switch with multicast support (IGMP snooping and a querier) and enough bandwidth, usually 1Gb for compressed 4K or 10Gb for uncompressed. Many sites run AV on its own VLAN or a dedicated switch so it does not compete with office traffic.
Can AV-over-IP share the corporate network?
Often yes, with the right switch configuration and IT approval. We work with IT on VLANs, QoS and multicast before anything is connected.
What about 4K and HDR?
Most current extenders and encoders carry 4K60 with HDR. Check whether a product compresses the signal and at what chroma (4:4:4 or 4:2:0), since that affects text clarity on computer content.
Do these products handle USB and control?
Many do. USB extension carries cameras and microphones back to a room PC, and RS-232, IR and Ethernet pass control commands to displays and projectors.
Which brands do you carry?
Crestron, LightWare, Extron, Atlona, AVPro Edge, Visionary Solutions, Kramer and Barco, among others.
Do you design and install distribution systems?
Yes. We design the signal flow and network, configure the switches with IT, install and commission the system. Call (888) 230-3661 or email sales@creationnetworks.net.
