Choosing a series

The NMX range spans compressed and near-lossless transport. Lower-bandwidth series run comfortably on 1G infrastructure and suit signage, classroom distribution and overflow. The higher series need 10G and deliver visually lossless 4K for control rooms, medical and production, where compression artefacts or latency would be unacceptable.

Decide from the content and the tolerance for latency, then confirm the network can carry it. That order matters — specifying endpoints first and discovering the switch cannot support them is the common failure.

The network is part of the system

AV-over-IP needs multicast and IGMP snooping configured correctly, and a switch that has not been set up for it will flood the network and produce faults that look like AV problems. Treat the switch as an AV component with an AV specification, not as something to hand to IT afterwards.

Scaling

The advantage over a fixed matrix is that capacity is set by switch ports rather than a chassis. Adding a room means adding endpoints, not replacing the matrix — which is why NMX suits campuses and buildings that keep growing.
