Interactive Display Specs That Matter Before You Buy: Classroom and Conference Room

Specify an interactive display by four numbers before anything else: panel brightness in cd/m², simultaneous touch points, the operating system version and who ships its security patches, and net weight measured against the wall you are hanging it on. Those four decide whether the panel is usable in year five. Pen feel, bundled whiteboard software, and camera count do not.

Most bad interactive display purchases are not bad panels. They are panels chosen against the wrong room. A 350 cd/m² panel is fine in a windowless conference room and washed out in a corner classroom with south-facing glass. An Android 9 device is fine on an isolated VLAN and a problem the day IT runs a vulnerability scan. Below are the specs that change the outcome, sourced from manufacturer documentation.

Quick answer: Specify an interactive display on four numbers before anything else: brightness in cd/m² (check whether it's measured with or without the touch glass - the gap is often 100+ nits), simultaneous touch points, the OS version and who commits to patching it, and net weight against the actual wall type. An OPS slot is the single spec that determines whether the panel survives past five years, since it lets you replace the compute board without replacing the display when the OS goes end-of-support.

Which touch technology should you specify — infrared, capacitive, or optically bonded?

Infrared and projected capacitive are the two touch methods in commercial interactive displays. Optical bonding is not a touch method — it is how the glass is laminated to the LCD, and it is the spec most often confused with the other two.

Infrared uses an emitter and receiver frame around the bezel. It is inexpensive at large sizes, accepts any stylus or a gloved hand, and supports high touch counts: MAXHUB lists 50 simultaneous touch points on both the U3 series and the XBoard V7, described in MAXHUB's specifications as "Intelligent Touchscreen Technology (infrared recognition)." The trade-off is a recessed bezel that collects chalk dust, plus a small activation height above the glass — MAXHUB's V5 Classic documentation states a writing height of "≤2mm" with "±1mm" accuracy.

Projected capacitive senses conductive contact through the glass, so it writes flush with no activation gap and no bezel channel to clean. Clear Touch's 7000XT is specified as "up to 40 points of simultaneous capacitive touch and 10 points of writing" with pressure detection; the earlier 7000XE is listed at "up to 20 points of simultaneous capacitive touch and 10 points of writing." Capacitive costs more above 75 inches and ignores a non-conductive stylus.

Optical bonding — MAXHUB brands its version "Zero Bonding," described on the V5 Classic page as minimal air gap between LCD and glass — removes the parallax between where the pen tip sits and where the ink appears. MAXHUB's XBoard V7 pairs 9H tempered glass at 3 mm thickness with what the spec sheet calls "zero parallax." Clear Touch rates the 7000XT cover glass at Level 9 on the Mohs scale. In a classroom, glass hardness and bonding matter more than touch count. Nobody puts 40 fingers on a panel; every third grader puts a fingernail on it.

How bright does an interactive display need to be in a lit room?

Brightness is where published specs and installed reality diverge most, and the reason is the cover glass. Samsung's specification for the 85-inch Flip Pro WM85B lists brightness as "350cd/m2 (w/o glass), 220cd/m2 (w/glass)." The number you see in the room is 220 cd/m², not 350.

Ask every manufacturer which of the two figures they are quoting, then match it to the room. For a conference room with shades and dimmable lighting, 350 cd/m² at the glass is adequate. For a classroom with uncontrolled daylight on one wall, specify higher and specify anti-glare. MAXHUB's U3 series is rated 450 nits on the 65-inch U6530 and 500 nits on the 75-inch U7530 and 86-inch U8630. Clear Touch's 6000A+ education specification lists 400 cd/m² at 65 and 75 inches and 450 cd/m² at 86 inches. MAXHUB's 105-inch UW Series is 400 nits typical with a 25% anti-glare coating.

Android version, OPS slot, or built-in compute — who owns the security updates?

This is the specification that most often fails a district or county IT review, and it rarely appears on the bid sheet. Interactive display Android builds are embedded, not phone builds, and the OS version is frozen at manufacture unless the vendor commits to updates in writing.

The spread across current catalogs is wide. Clear Touch's 6000A+ education page lists Android 15. MAXHUB's U3 series lists Android 13.0 with Google EDLA certification — the licensing route that brings Google Play services and Google's update channel onto the device, which is what to ask for if you need managed app deployment. MAXHUB's V5 Classic, by contrast, takes an OPS module and offers "optional Android 9.0 or Windows 10 modules sold separately." Samsung's Flip Pro WM85B runs Tizen 6.5, not Android.

The OPS slot is the answer to OS lifecycle risk and worth its cost for that reason alone. An OPS module is a replaceable compute board inside the panel — swap it in year four and the glass, touch frame, and backlight keep working. MAXHUB's XBoard V7 uses "a modular PC running Windows IoT," listed as sold separately, so confirm your quote includes it. Panels with built-in Android compute only are a single unit: when the OS goes end-of-support, the display goes with it.

Specify it this way: OPS slot standard on any classroom panel you expect to hold past five years, a written statement of security update duration, Google EDLA if you need managed Google Play, and its own VLAN either way.

Does an interactive display need to be Teams or Zoom certified?

For a classroom, usually no. For a conference room where the panel is the meeting endpoint, yes — and know what certification does and does not cover.

Microsoft's documentation states that its certification program "consists of third party testing and three levels of internal testing before certification is awarded" and "tests the devices based on a set of rigorous specifications, covering aspects such as audio and video quality, user interface, device management, and security." Microsoft's Teams Rooms certified hardware page keeps a distinct category for Windows touchboards and standalone consoles, so interactive panels are certified as a class. Read the limitation on that same page: "The certification program doesn't evaluate feature-level or cloud environment support." Certification is a hardware floor, not a guarantee that a given Teams feature works on that panel in your tenant.

Zoom works the same way — its hardware certification overview states that "Certification includes testing at a third-party lab as well as Zoom's own subjective testing." For the annotation and whiteboard workflow, the requirement is more specific than "certified": Zoom's documentation for Zoom Whiteboard in Zoom Rooms calls for a "Zoom Rooms for Touch-capable device (Windows), with a built-in or external touchscreen display," Zoom Rooms for Windows 5.10.3 or higher, and Zoom Whiteboard enabled by an administrator.

In a classroom, buy the better panel and run conferencing as software on a laptop or OPS module. In a conference room, buy a certified room system and a display validated with it. Installation note: weight, VESA pattern, and the drywall problem

This is the line item that turns a clean install into a change order. Interactive panels are heavy, and in classrooms they usually go on drywall. Samsung's Flip Pro WM85B has a net weight of 75.2 kg — 166 lb — with a 600 x 400 mm VESA pattern. The MAXHUB UW105NA 105" ultra wide commercial display is 89.4 kg, 197 lb, with a 1000 x 400 mm VESA pattern. Add mount weight and a student leaning on the bottom bezel, and you are past what drywall anchors carry.

Now do the stud math, the part estimators skip. A 600 mm VESA pattern is 23.6 inches wide; a 1000 mm pattern is 39.4 inches. Neither is a multiple of 16 inches, so neither set of mount rails lands on 16-inch on-center framing. You need a mount with a horizontal spanning bar or, better, 3/4-inch plywood backing lag-bolted across at least three studs and finished flush before paint. Get it into the drawings at rough-in — adding it after millwork means opening a finished wall.

Clear Touch is direct about the risk on its mounts page: "Technology is often heavy and can pose fall and safety hazards unless properly installed." Its fixed wall mount, CTI-MOUNT-FIXW-V3, is rated to 300 lb and ships with every Clear Touch interactive panel. Note the warranty asymmetry against mobile stands: the CTI-STAND-FIXM-V3 fixed mobile stand is also rated to 300 lb but carries a 90-day warranty, against 3 years on the wall mount and on the ADA-compliant CTI-MOUNT-ADJW-W1 height-adjustable wall mount.

Use mobile stands for pilot rooms, flexible-furniture classrooms, and spaces where structural backing will not get approved. Use wall mounts everywhere else. What does an interactive display cost over a 5–7 year refresh cycle?

Start with the fact that the panel almost never wears out. Clear Touch and MAXHUB both publish DLED backlight life of ≥50,000 hours. A classroom panel running 7 hours a day across a 180-day school year uses 1,260 hours annually — roughly 40 years of backlight. The hardware is not the limiting factor. The operating system, the warranty, and the software subscription are. On a 5–7 year cycle, these are the costs that actually move.
