Product Overview

PSU-12VDC-40W2= is Cisco's 12V DC 40W external power supply. It is the local power option for the Cisco Webex PTZ 4K Camera, which draws 12V/3A, in installations where a PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) port is not available at the camera position. The same part number also served the older Cisco TelePresence E20 IP video phone, so it appears in reseller catalogues under both descriptions. It is ordered as a separate line, either as the primary power method or as a spare.

Product Description

This part gets specified for one of two reasons, and it is worth knowing which one applies before it goes on the order. The first is that the network position serving the camera cannot deliver PoE+. That happens more often than switch datasheets suggest, usually because the port budget on an existing access switch is already committed, or because the camera is landing on a small unmanaged switch that was never in the AV scope. The second reason is spares: on a site where the camera is powered locally, a failed adapter takes the room out of service, and a shelf spare is cheaper than an emergency order.

The practical consequence of choosing local power is a mains outlet at the camera position, which is a different trade and often a different drawing. At a wall position on the CS-PTZ4K-BRKT wall bracket, or at a ceiling position, that outlet has to be co-ordinated with the electrical contractor before the wall closes, and the adapter itself needs somewhere to sit that is neither visible from the room nor buried where it cannot be reached for service. Where the choice is still open, PoE+ over the existing Cat 6 run is usually the cheaper path, because it removes the outlet and the adapter from the estimate together. At 40W the supply has headroom over the camera's 36W draw at 12V/3A, so it is sized for the load rather than sitting at its limit. Note that this is not a universal Cisco 12V part: the Room Vision PTZ camera is PoE+ only, and where its switch port cannot supply PoE+ the correct accessory is the CS-PWR-INJ-30W injector rather than a DC adapter.
