Specifying a discussion system

Start with seat count and whether every position needs a microphone. Then decide what the proceedings actually require: simple turn-taking, or chairman priority, voting and recorded output. Those requirements determine the control unit as much as the delegate units do.

Infrared systems suit rooms where cabling is restricted or the furniture moves; wired systems suit permanent chambers where the seating is fixed and reliability matters more than flexibility.

Microphone discipline

The limit on how many microphones can be open at once is a design decision, not a default. Too many open at once and the room feeds back or turns muddy; too few and delegates talk over a closed microphone. Set it from the room and the way meetings actually run.

Recording and streaming

Where proceedings are recorded or published, the output from the conference system feeds that chain. Plan it at design stage — retrofitting a clean feed after the fact usually means reopening the rack.
