Product Overview

The Tannoy VQ 85DF 2-way down-firing dual concentric mid-high loudspeaker is a high-performance installation enclosure built to deliver even coverage to the areas immediately below main flown loudspeaker arrays. This down-firing dual concentric loudspeaker matches the exact footprint of VQ full-range and VQ MB cabinets, letting AV system designers tight-pack arrays without complex flyware. With an 80 x 50 degree coverage pattern and point-source coherence, the VQ 85DF suits large sports arenas, stadia, auditoriums, and other venues that require predictable down-fill coverage. Weather-resistant enclosures with stainless steel hardware are available for outdoor applications.

Product Description

Tannoy VQ 85DF 2-way down-firing dual concentric mid-high loudspeaker in black

The VQ 85DF uses a Dual Concentric 3.5-inch and 1.75-inch diaphragm compression driver array to reproduce mid and high frequencies from a single coherent point source. Tannoy's patented PSW waveguide technology aligns the acoustic centres of the transducers, producing a single coherent wavefront from the throat for well-controlled coverage, smooth frequency response, and natural sound character. The down-firing configuration allows tight-packing without complex flyware, and compound angles on the enclosure avoid unsightly spaces between cabinets when arrayed horizontally. VQ MH elements integrate with the 85DF to build tight-packed arrays, while VQ MB or VS 15DR elements can extend bandwidth and pattern control to lower frequencies. The cabinet handles 200 watts continuous and 800 watts peak, with rated maximum SPL of 134 dB average and 140 dB peak, and it is user configurable for single-amplified (passive) or bi-amp operation with a 7 kHz crossover. The internally steel-braced 18 mm birch plywood enclosure is finished in hard-wearing semi matt black paint with a powder-coated perforated steel grille, and carries eleven M10 flying inserts and two recessed handles, with optional vertical flyware rated to a 10:1 safety ratio. Input and link connections use speakON NL4 and barrier strip connectors. Browse the full Tannoy collection at Creation Networks, or compare it with the wider-coverage Tannoy VQ 64DF.

Key Features

  • Down-Firing Coverage — Provides even coverage to areas immediately below main flown loudspeakers, filling the down-fill zone in arena and auditorium designs.
  • Dual Concentric Compression Drivers — A 3.5-inch and 1.75-inch diaphragm compression driver array reproduces mid and high frequencies from a single point source.
  • PSW Waveguide Technology — The patented PSW waveguide aligns acoustic centres for a coherent wavefront, smooth response, and natural sound character.
  • 80 x 50 Dispersion — A controlled 80 x 50 degree pattern allows tightly packed point-source clusters and predictable coverage mapping.
  • Matched Footprint — The enclosure matches the footprint of VQ full-range and VQ MB cabinets, with compound angles that avoid gaps in horizontal arrays.
  • High Power Handling — Rated at 200 watts continuous and 800 watts peak with a rated maximum SPL of 140 dB peak for high-output installations.
  • Passive or Bi-Amp — User-configurable single-amplified (passive) or bi-amp operation with a 7 kHz crossover matches your amplification and DSP scheme.
