What is the RDL RU-FN?

The RDL RU-FN is a RACK-UP Format-A receiver that converts RDL Format-A twisted-pair audio to Dante network channels. Format-A pairs A, B and C each become a Dante channel, and a fourth channel comes from a balanced or unbalanced aux line input. It extends existing RDL Format-A wall plate and sender systems onto a Dante network.

How does it work?

RDL RU-FN Format-A to Dante interface

Format-A connections run on RJ45 jacks over CATx cable, and each sender can be near the RU-FN or up to several thousand feet away. The Format-A input supplies up to 200 mA to connected senders, and multiple senders can be daisy chained. Front-panel green LEDs show the received audio level on each of the three Format-A pairs, which helps setup without a networked computer on site. The aux input accepts the full range of unbalanced and balanced line-level sources, with a front-panel gain control and dual-LED VU meter. High-resolution 24-bit converters and RDL analog filtering deliver a very low noise floor. LEDs show Dante network sync status. The RU-FN is powered from an external 24 Vdc supply, available separately, which also powers the Format-A senders connected to its input; RDL recommends its PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international) 24 Vdc supply. The module is equipped for rack or surface mounting with RDL RACK-UP accessories such as the RU-HRA1 10.4-inch rack mount, RC-1UR 19-inch universal rack chassis, RU-SMA1 surface mounting plate and RU-BR1 under-surface bracket.

What are the key features?

  • Format-A to Dante — Converts Format-A pairs A, B and C to three Dante channels.
  • Aux line input — A fourth Dante channel comes from a balanced or unbalanced line input with gain control and VU meter.
  • Powers remote senders — The Format-A input supplies up to 200 mA to connected senders.
  • Signal LEDs — Front-panel LEDs indicate audio on each Format-A pair.
  • 24-bit conversion — High-resolution converters with RDL analog filtering.
  • 24 Vdc powered — Runs from an external 24 Vdc supply that also powers connected senders.
  • Rack or surface mount — Fits RDL RACK-UP rack and surface mounting accessories.

Where is it typically used?

  • Conference rooms and boardrooms
  • Training rooms and classrooms
  • Auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms
  • Houses of worship
  • Government and commercial facilities

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RDL Format-A?

Format-A is RDL's twisted-pair system that carries up to three audio pairs plus power over CATx cable between RDL senders and receivers.

How far can Format-A senders be from the RU-FN?

RDL states that each Format-A sender may be connected near the unit or up to several thousand feet away.

How is the RU-FN powered?

It requires an external 24 Vdc supply (24 Vdc at 100 mA plus connected loads). RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international). The RU-FNP version adds PoE.

Can I also send Dante audio back out as Format-A?

Yes, with a separate network-to-Format-A unit such as the RDL RU-NFD.

What warranty does the RU-FN carry?

This product is covered by a 7-year RDL warranty. For warranty claims, RMAs or support, contact Creation Networks at (888) 230-3661 or sales@creationnetworks.net.

Can Creation Networks help design and commission the system?

Yes. Our team handles networked audio design, equipment selection, installation and commissioning for commercial projects nationwide. Call (888) 230-3661 to discuss your project.
