Product Overview
The NETGEAR Align Controller (GB406) is a purpose-built appliance for AV-over-IP network management, hosting NETGEAR Engage alongside the core network services an AV network depends on. It replaces a stack of discrete boxes — PTP grandmaster clock, DHCP, DNS, NTP and Syslog — with a single half-width 1U rack-mount unit. NETGEAR positions it as a platform layer above the switch rather than a switch itself: it publishes no switching capacity and supplies no PoE to endpoints. For integrators standardising on NETGEAR AV switching, it centralises configuration, timing and addressing for the whole deployment.
Product Description
Engage is the reason most buyers specify this appliance. It provides centralised configuration and monitoring for NETGEAR AV managed switches, Pro Routers and WiFi 7 access points, including offline provisioning so a rack can be staged on the bench before it reaches site. Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG interoperability is published for the M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switch families, which is what makes plug-and-play behaviour possible across a multi-switch AV network.
The timing function is the other half of the specification. The built-in PTP grandmaster clock runs up to six instances and covers the profiles that commercial AV and broadcast actually ask for: Default 1588, AES67, SMPTE ST 2059-2, AES-R16-2016 and IEEE 802.1AS gPTP for AVB. It serves up to 1,000 boundary or ordinary clock clients system-wide and 200 per port. Each instance requires one VLAN and one physical interface, and Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG must be disabled where multiple PTPv2 or AVB instances are in use. PTP 2.0 only is supported — PTPv1 and PTPv2.1 are not.
Underneath, this is an x86 platform rather than embedded firmware: an octa-core Intel Amston Lake x7809C at 2.4 GHz, 16 GB of LPDDR5, 64 GB of internal eMMC and an M.2 2242 SATA bay for expansion. It runs Ubuntu with Docker, and NETGEAR documents third-party application support on top of the pre-installed services, which is what the “platform” framing refers to. Six network interfaces are provided — four 2.5G copper and two 10G SFP+ — so instances can be attached to separate VLANs without contention.
Deployment is straightforward for a rack-based install. The unit can be powered from a 2.5G PoE++ port as an 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8 powered device, or from the included 54V DC adapter, with 1+1 redundancy if both are connected — useful where a dedicated power circuit at the rack is inconvenient. It draws 71W maximum and carries a single PWM fan at 32.8 dB, so it is not a silent device and belongs in a closet or rack rather than an occupied boardroom. Rackmount brackets and a two-unit pairing kit ship in the box for mounting one or two half-width units per rack unit.
Local management is a browser-based HTTPS interface for up to five concurrent users on the LAN, reached at 192.168.1.250 on VLAN 1 during installation. Remote access to Engage through the NETGEAR Insight portal is a licensed feature, included for three months and extended by the GB406P60-10000S five-year Premium licence. Hardware is covered by NETGEAR's Enterprise five-year warranty with 90 days of complimentary technical support; longer coverage is available through the GB406 support contract. Companion hardware NETGEAR names alongside it includes the M4350-16C (CSM4316), the M4350-16M4V (MSM4320) and the WBE708 WiFi 7 access point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which NETGEAR switches does the Align Controller work with?
NETGEAR publishes Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG interoperability with the M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 AV managed switch families. Engage itself manages AV switches, Pro Routers and WiFi 7 access points; NETGEAR does not publish a maximum managed device count, so confirm against your deployment size if the estate is large.
Does the GB406 replace a switch in the AV rack?
No. It is a management and services appliance, not a switching device. NETGEAR publishes no switching capacity or forwarding rate for it, and its six interfaces exist to attach the appliance to VLANs rather than to connect endpoints. AV endpoints still terminate on an AV managed switch such as the M4250-40G8XF-PoE+.
Can it be powered over Ethernet, or does it need a local outlet?
Either. The 2.5G PD port accepts 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8 PoE++ at 90W, and a 54V DC adapter is included in the box. Connecting both gives 1+1 redundancy. Budget 71W maximum against the upstream PoE switch if powering it over Ethernet.
How does the PTP grandmaster integrate with an existing AV system?
Each PTP instance needs one VLAN and one physical interface, and up to six instances run concurrently across the AES67, SMPTE ST 2059-2, AES-R16-2016, Default 1588 and 802.1AS gPTP profiles. Where multiple PTPv2 or AVB instances are configured, Auto-Trunk and Auto-LAG must be disabled. Note that only PTP 2.0 is supported.
Is a licence required to manage the appliance remotely?
Local management over HTTPS needs no licence and supports five concurrent LAN users. Remote access to Engage through the NETGEAR Insight portal is included for three months, after which the GB406P60-10000S five-year licence extends it, along with third-party application support.
Where should the unit be installed acoustically?
It uses an active PWM fan rated at 32.8 dB at 25°C, so it is not suited to an occupied boardroom or a lectern. Install it in a rack, comms closet or equipment room.
What warranty and support coverage applies?
Hardware carries NETGEAR's Enterprise five-year warranty covering the unit, fans and internal power supplies, with product registration required within 90 days of purchase. Ninety days of complimentary technical support and Fast RMA are included; extended coverage is ordered separately as a GB406 support contract.
