Product Overview
The Meyer Sound Ashby-8C is a self-powered 8-inch in-ceiling loudspeaker engineered for distributed audio systems that demand accurate music reproduction and high speech intelligibility. Built on Meyer Sound's IntelligentDC platform, it delivers a deeper low end and higher SPL than most in-ceiling loudspeakers of comparable size. Its smooth, consistent 100° conical coverage allows fewer units to cover a larger area, reducing overall system count. This black-finish model ships without an onboard attenuator (ATTN) for installations where level is managed upstream.
Product Description

The Ashby-8C combines onboard Class-D amplification with sophisticated signal processing to produce the flat frequency and phase response for which Meyer Sound loudspeakers are known. A 0.75-inch metal-dome tweeter is mounted concentrically over an 8-inch cone driver in a coaxial configuration that maximizes the wave-guide surface for even directivity. The loudspeaker draws balanced audio and 48 V DC power over a single composite cable from a Meyer Sound MPS IntelligentDC power supply, which permits longer, lighter-gauge cable runs without conduit under NEC Class 2 wiring. Its zinc-plated steel back-can is fire-rated for installation in air-handling plenum spaces, and the low-profile perforated steel grille blends discreetly into finished ceilings. For smaller rooms or tighter spacing, the Meyer Sound Ashby-5C offers the same IntelligentDC architecture in a 5-inch format, and the full IntelligentDC range is available in the Meyer Sound collection. This unit is the black, no-attenuator configuration.
Key Features
- Self-Powered Design — Onboard Class-D amplification with a total output power of 440 W peak removes the need for external amplifier channels.
- Coaxial Transducer — A 0.75-inch dome tweeter mounted concentrically over an 8-inch cone driver delivers point-source coherence across the listening area.
- Wide Conical Coverage — A consistent 100° conical pattern lets fewer loudspeakers cover a larger floor area while maintaining even level.
- High SPL-to-Size Ratio — Linear peak SPL reaches 114 dB with 19 dB crest factor (M-noise) from a compact ceiling enclosure.
- IntelligentDC Power and Audio — Balanced audio and 48 V DC power are delivered over a single composite cable from an MPS power supply, supporting long, light-gauge runs.
- Plenum-Rated Enclosure — The zinc-plated steel back-can is fire-rated to UL 2043 for installation in air-handling ceiling spaces.
- Low Distortion — THD, IM, and TIM are specified at less than 0.02% for clean reproduction of speech and music.
- Discreet Flush Mounting — A low-profile perforated steel grille flush-mounts into ceilings and blends with most interior finishes.
Typical Applications
- Conference rooms and boardrooms requiring high-quality distributed program and voice reproduction
- House of worship sanctuaries and multi-purpose rooms needing wide, even ceiling coverage
- Commercial meeting spaces and all-hands rooms with distributed audio and paging
- Training rooms and government spaces where intelligible speech is critical

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Ashby-8C require a separate amplifier?
No. The Ashby-8C is self-powered with an onboard Class-D amplifier, but it does require a Meyer Sound MPS-488HP or MPS-482HP IntelligentDC power supply to deliver 48 V DC and balanced audio.
How many Ashby-8C units can one power supply drive?
One MPS-488HP can power up to 16 Ashby-8C loudspeakers (2 per channel), and one MPS-482HP can power up to 4 Ashby-8C loudspeakers (2 per channel).
Can the Ashby-8C be installed in a plenum ceiling?
Yes. The zinc-plated steel back-can is fire-rated to UL 2043 for installation in air-handling spaces.
What does the no-ATTN designation mean?
This configuration ships without an onboard attenuator, which is appropriate when output level is set upstream at the source or processor.
Is this product covered by a warranty?
Yes. It is covered under Meyer Sound's standard product warranty. For details, please contact us.
