Product Overview

The JBL 708P master reference monitor is an 8-inch bi-amplified studio monitor for critical music recording, film post-production, and broadcast environments that demand high output with reference-grade accuracy. As a self-powered reference monitor, it combines JBL's patented Image Control Waveguide with a Differential Drive low-frequency transducer to produce a wide sweet spot and several times the output of comparably sized monitors. The compact two-way enclosure keeps sight lines clear in modern control rooms while serving as a high-output near-field monitor for post-production and mastering suites. The 708P is sold individually, so specify channel count when configuring stereo or multichannel installations.

Product Description

The JBL 708P powered reference monitor pairs a 2409H high-frequency compression driver, with a low-mass annular diaphragm reaching beyond 36 kHz, and a 728G 8-inch low-frequency transducer built on JBL's patented Differential Drive technology to reduce power compression and extend linear output below 35 Hz. A built-in dual amplification system dedicates a 250W Class-D amplifier to each transducer, supporting the long working distances and high sustained levels required in demanding production rooms. Onboard 32-bit floating-point DSP at 192 kHz provides 12 bands of Room EQ, 8 bands of User EQ, and digital delay for room alignment and AV synchronization, so the monitor can be tuned to room acoustics and video latency. This Image Control Waveguide monitor accepts an AES3 digital input with XLR pass-through alongside a balanced XLR analog input, making it a straightforward AES3 digital input studio monitor for DAWs, consoles, and digital playback hardware at sample rates up to 192 kHz. An RJ-45 HARMAN HiQnet connection, integrated handles, and reinforced mounting points support clean commercial deployment, and the 708P scales with additional 7 Series models, the flagship M2, and the Intonato 24 controller for multichannel and immersive systems. Where space or output needs are lower, the 5-inch JBL 705P master reference monitor shares the same platform and control set.

Key Features

  • Bi-amplified dual 250W design — Separate 250W Class-D amplifiers for the HF and LF transducers deliver high SPL with headroom for extended listening distances.
  • 728G Differential Drive woofer — JBL's patented dual-voice-coil design reduces power compression for greater sustained output and linear low-frequency response below 35 Hz.
  • Patented Image Control Waveguide — Widens the usable sweet spot and maintains accurate imaging across on- and off-axis listening positions.
  • 2409H high-frequency compression driver — A low-mass annular diaphragm reproduces detail beyond 36 kHz with very low distortion.
  • Floating-point DSP with room correction — 192 kHz, 32-bit processing provides 12 bands of Room EQ, 8 bands of User EQ, and 6 factory plus 6 user presets.
  • Room and AV-sync delay — Up to 18 ms of Room Delay and 150 ms of AV Sync Delay align speakers to the listening position and compensate for video latency.
  • Analog and AES3 digital inputs — A balanced XLR analog input and an AES3 digital input with XLR pass-through accept sample rates up to 192 kHz.
  • HARMAN HiQnet networking — An RJ-45 connection enables system configuration and firmware feature updates across larger installations.
  • Versatile mounting with integrated handles — Reinforced birch plywood enclosure with top, bottom, and rear mounting points supports vertical or horizontal installation.
  • Scalable monitoring platform — Integrates with other JBL 7 Series models, the M2, and the Intonato 24 controller for multichannel and immersive rooms.

Typical Applications

  • Recording and mixing studios — High-output, neutral near-field reference for tracking and mixdown.
  • Post-production and mastering suites — Sustained output and accuracy at extended listening distances.
  • Broadcast studios and control rooms — Reference monitoring with clear display sight lines.
  • Immersive and Dolby Atmos rooms — Scalable with additional 7 Series and M2 monitors for multichannel configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 708P sold as a single monitor or a pair?
It is sold individually. Order the quantity required for your configuration — two for stereo, or additional units for surround and immersive systems.

How does the 708P integrate with a DAW, console, or digital playback system?
It accepts a balanced XLR analog input and an AES3 format digital input with XLR pass-through at sample rates up to 192 kHz. User-enabled sample rate converters allow connection to sources with non-standard rates.

Can the 708P be wall- or ceiling-mounted in a control room?
Yes. The reinforced birch plywood enclosure includes top, bottom, and rear mounting points with a 4-hole pattern, supporting vertical or horizontal installation with appropriate JBL mounting hardware.

What is Differential Drive and why does it matter for post-production?
The 728G woofer uses JBL's patented Differential Drive design to reduce power compression, allowing higher sustained output and more linear low-frequency response — useful in rooms with high workloads and long listening distances.

How does the 708P scale into a multichannel or immersive system?
It combines with other JBL 7 Series monitors and the flagship M2, and can be managed with the JBL Intonato 24 monitor controller. The HARMAN HiQnet RJ-45 connection supports system configuration across the install.

What warranty and support apply?
The 708P carries JBL Professional's manufacturer warranty. For warranty registration, firmware, and technical support, contact our team at sales@creationnetworks.net or browse the full JBL Professional collection.
