What is the Christie DWU23-HS?

The Christie DWU23-HS is a 1DLP laser projector delivering 23,650 ISO lumens (21,000 ANSI) at WUXGA 1920 x 1200, using Christie BoldColor+ technology. At under 92 lbs it has an excellent lumen-to-weight ratio, and Christie positions it as a viable alternative to similarly bright 3DLP projectors. It ships without a lens.

A TAA-compliant version is available as the DWU23A-HS, part number 171-055101.

Why it competes with 3DLP

At this brightness the usual assumption is 3DLP. BoldColor+ narrows that gap by adding a dedicated red laser alongside the blue, lifting the colour laser phosphor handles least well. The result is deeper blacks, better colour uniformity and more natural visuals — at a 1DLP price and in a 1DLP chassis.

RealBlack goes further by switching the laser off entirely on black scenes, producing 4,000,000:1 contrast against 1,200:1 with it disabled.

Where absolute colour accuracy is the deliverable — museums, mapped installations — 3DLP still wins. Where brightness and value drive the decision, this is the honest alternative.

Weight is the practical advantage

91.5 lbs for 23,650 lumens changes what is possible on a rig. It ships easier, lifts easier, and needs less structure than a 3DLP projector of similar output. On a truss or a temporary installation that difference is measured in crew hours.

It also runs fully omnidirectional, so orientation is not a constraint.

Lens selection

Ten HS Series lenses are available from a 0.38:1 UST to a 7.2–10.8:1 long zoom. Six carry zoom and focus memory, which matters on multi-projector systems where lenses are recalled to saved positions.

Lens shift is substantial — ±140% vertical and ±50% horizontal on full ILS lenses — so the projector can usually be positioned where the structure allows rather than where the optics demand. See the Christie lens range.

Medical and training capability

DICOM simulation mode reproduces the grayscale response used for X-ray and medical scan review. This is for training rather than diagnosis, but for a teaching hospital or medical school it means one projector covers general presentation and imaging review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this projector include a lens?

No. Ten HS Series lenses are available from 0.38:1 UST to 7.2–10.8:1 long zoom, six with zoom and focus memory.

Why choose this over a 3DLP projector of similar brightness?

Weight, cost and footprint. At 91.5 lbs it ships, lifts and rigs more easily, and BoldColor+ closes much of the colour gap. Where absolute colour accuracy is the deliverable, 3DLP still wins.

What is the difference between ISO and ANSI lumens here?

Christie publishes 23,650 ISO and 21,000 ANSI for the same projector — different measurement standards, not different outputs. Confirm which standard a competing figure uses before comparing.

Is there a TAA-compliant version?

Yes — the DWU23A-HS, part number 171-055101. Creation Networks verifies TAA status per part number and supplies country-of-origin documentation before a federal purchase order.

What does DICOM simulation mode do?

It reproduces the grayscale response used for reviewing X-rays and medical scans. It is intended for training rather than diagnosis.

How quiet is it?

As low as 35 dBA in Eco2 mode at 2x wheel speed, rising to 45 dBA in standard mode at 3x. Worth checking against the room, since a projector in a quiet auditorium is heard as well as seen.

Can Creation Networks design and install it?

Yes. Creation Networks is CTS-D certified and designs, installs and supports projection systems nationwide — lens selection, throw calculation, rigging, blending and commissioning. Call 888-230-3661 or email sales@creationnetworks.net.
