Product Overview
The Williams AV IR SY12 is the IR+ Secure infrared assistive listening system, configured for venues where transmitted audio must stay inside the room. Infrared light does not pass through walls, which makes this large-area system a standing specification for courtrooms, hearing rooms, and confidential government spaces. The package combines the IR M1 modulator with two linked IR E4 emitters, five rechargeable IR RX20 stethoset receivers, two neckloops for hearing aid users, a five-bay charger, and ADA wall signage.
Product Description
The system head end is the IR M1 infrared modulator, a single-rack-unit unit with two combination XLR/quarter-inch TRS audio inputs that accept balanced or unbalanced line-level or microphone signals with selectable phantom power. Two independent audio channels can be modulated, with carrier frequencies selectable between the 2.3/2.8 MHz and 3.3/3.8 MHz pairs, supporting dual-language or program-plus-assistance configurations. If the facility later standardizes on networked audio, the Dante-equipped IR SY12 D is the matching configuration.
DSP processing in the modulator provides compression at 1:1, 1.5:1, or 2:1 with high-pass and low-pass filter control, conditioning speech for listeners with hearing loss rather than simply repeating the program feed. An embedded web page handles configuration, the adjustable auto carrier shut-off, and diagnostics, while a 400 Hz internal test tone and front-panel headphone jacks for both channels speed setup and troubleshooting at the rack.
Coverage comes from two IR E4 emitters mounted together on the included MLB 003 metal linking bar with BKT 024 wall brackets. Each emitter connects to the modulator over a single Cat5e cable that delivers +48 VDC power, RS-485 communication, and the baseband infrared signal, so the emitter wall needs no electrical outlet. With each IR E4 rated up to 18,000 square feet in single-channel mode, the linked pair covers large courtrooms and assembly rooms from one position, and identical systems can run in adjacent rooms without any frequency coordination.
Listeners use the IR RX20 stethoset receiver, a 1.6-ounce under-chin unit with an internal LiPo battery rated for 8 hours per charge; all five recharge in the included CHG 520 five-bay charger. Two NKL 001 neckloops couple audio to telecoil hearing aids for ADA hearing-aid-compatible counts, and the IDP 008 plaque marks assistive listening availability at the entrance. Additional receivers and accessories are available in the Williams AV collection at Creation Networks.
Key Features
- Physically Secure Transmission — Infrared energy is contained by the room's walls, so confidential proceedings cannot be monitored from outside the space.
- Large-Area Dual-Emitter Design — Two IR E4 emitters on the MLB 003 linking bar cover up to 18,000 square feet each in single-channel mode from a single wall position.
- Two-Channel Operation — The IR M1 modulates two independent audio channels for dual-language or multi-program use.
- Rechargeable Stethoset Receivers — Five IR RX20 receivers run roughly 8 hours per charge and drop into the included CHG 520 five-bay charger, removing battery replacement from the operating routine.
- Hearing Aid Neckloops Included — Two NKL 001 neckloops provide telecoil coupling required for ADA hearing-aid-compatible receivers.
- Single-Cable Emitter Installation — Power, control, and signal reach each emitter on one Cat5e run from the modulator.
- DSP Intelligibility Processing — Selectable compression and filtering shape audio specifically for hearing assistance.
- Embedded Web Configuration — Remote setup and diagnostics through the modulator's built-in web page, no software install required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes infrared more secure than FM or Wi-Fi assistive listening?
FM and Wi-Fi signals radiate beyond the room and can be received by anyone with a compatible device nearby. Infrared light is stopped by walls, so the IR SY12's audio is only receivable by people physically inside the space.
Does the IR SY12 include Dante?
No. This configuration uses the analog IR M1 modulator with two combo XLR/TRS inputs. The IR SY12 D is the same package with the Dante-equipped IR M1 D for networked audio environments.
How do I feed audio from my existing sound system?
Connect a line-level output from your mixer or DSP to one of the modulator's combination XLR/TRS inputs. Microphone-level sources are also supported, with selectable phantom power for condenser microphones.
Can adjacent courtrooms each run their own system?
Yes. Because infrared does not cross walls, identical systems in neighboring rooms operate without interference and without frequency coordination.
What is included for hearing aid users?
Two NKL 001 neckloops plug into the IR RX20's 3.5 mm jack and couple the audio to telecoil-equipped hearing aids, supporting ADA hearing-aid-compatible receiver requirements.
What warranty backs the system?
The modulator and emitters carry a 2-year Williams AV warranty; the IR RX20 receivers carry 5 years with 90 days on the battery, and accessories are covered for 90 days.
