Product Overview

The SurgeX SX-DC-8-12-120 SQUID is a compact, network-managed AC and DC power management system designed for small meeting spaces, huddle rooms, and digital signage deployments. As a networked AC/DC power management system for AV, the SQUID consolidates surge-protected AC outlets, controllable 12V DC outputs, wired Ethernet management, and comprehensive power quality monitoring into a single device. It replaces the multiple discrete products — AC surge protector, DC power supply, and network-accessible PDU — that would otherwise be required to power and manage a modern small-room AV system.

Product Description

The SX-DC-8-12-120 SQUID accepts universal 120V–240V AC input via IEC connectors and provides four controlled and monitored AC receptacles, three DC output banks (two of which are controllable), and two 5V USB charging ports in a form factor compact enough to mount alongside, behind, or beneath equipment rather than consuming rack space. The 12V DC output banks are sized for the camera controllers, codecs, and display extenders commonly found in modern huddle room and video conferencing deployments.

Ethernet connectivity provides access to a built-in web server supporting both HTTP and HTTPS, with 802.1x port-level authentication for network security compliance. The management interface supports TLS, SSL, SNMP V3, and single sign-on, giving IT administrators and AV operators the ability to monitor, control, and audit power across distributed installations from a single Network Operations Center. Individual outlet control, live measurement data, and power quality event logs are all accessible remotely without requiring a technician on site.

The SQUID measures six electrical parameters per outlet in real time: voltage, current, power, frequency, power factor, and crest factor. These measurements provide the diagnostic data needed to identify power quality issues before they cause equipment failures or system downtime. Time-stamped power quality events and 30 days of stored maximum, minimum, and average parameter data allow retrospective analysis of power conditions during any previous incident.

SurgeX Advanced Series Mode surge elimination technology protects all AC outlets against surges up to 6,000 volts with zero let-through voltage, producing no ground contamination or common-mode disturbances. This level of protection, combined with the SQUID's compact form factor and network management capability, makes it a practical choice for IT-managed AV deployments where power protection and remote monitoring are both required but rack space is not available.

Key Features

  • Integrated AC and DC Power — Four controlled AC receptacles and three 12V DC banks (two controllable) in a single compact device, eliminating separate power supply and surge protector requirements.
  • Network-Managed via Web Server — Built-in HTTP/HTTPS web server with 802.1x authentication, TLS, SSL, SNMP V3, and single sign-on for IT-grade remote management and NOC integration.
  • Six-Parameter Power Monitoring — Real-time measurement of voltage, current, power, frequency, power factor, and crest factor per outlet for proactive power quality management.
  • 30-Day Power Quality History — Stores Max/Min/Average electrical parameters for 30 days with time-stamped event logging for retrospective diagnostics and compliance documentation.
  • Advanced Series Mode Surge Elimination — Zero let-through voltage on AC surges up to 6,000V; no ground contamination or common-mode disturbances affecting connected equipment.
  • Universal AC Input — Accepts 120V–240V AC input via IEC connectors for deployment in both domestic and international AV installations.
  • 2 x 5V USB Charging Ports — Provides USB-A charging for room peripherals such as video conferencing room controllers, tablets, and USB-powered accessories.
  • Compact Form Factor — Designed to mount along, behind, or near equipment in huddle rooms and digital signage installations where rack space is unavailable.
  • Individual Outlet Control — Each AC outlet and controllable DC bank can be switched independently via the network management interface for remote power cycling and scheduling.
  • 802.1x Network Authentication — Supports enterprise network security requirements, allowing the SQUID to connect to managed network infrastructure without a security exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SQUID replace in a typical huddle room AV installation?
The SQUID replaces a separate AC surge protector, one or more DC power supplies for 12V AV devices, and a network-accessible PDU. By combining all three in a single compact unit with Ethernet management, it reduces both the hardware count and the cabling complexity in small-room AV deployments.
How is the SX-DC-8-12-120 different from the SX-DC-8-24-120 and SX-DC-8-1224-120 SQUID models?
All three SQUID models share the same form factor, AC outlet configuration, network management features, and surge protection. They differ in DC output voltage: the SX-DC-8-12-120 provides 12V DC outputs, the SX-DC-8-24-120 provides 24V DC outputs, and the SX-DC-8-1224-120 provides both 12V and 24V DC outputs in the same unit.
Can I manage multiple SQUID units from a single interface?
Yes. Each SQUID unit connects to the network independently and can be accessed via its individual web server interface. For centralized management across multiple locations, the units support SNMP V3, which allows them to be integrated into an enterprise Network Operations Center or AV monitoring platform.
What electrical parameters does the SQUID monitor, and why does that matter?
The SQUID measures voltage, current, power, frequency, power factor, and crest factor in real time per outlet. Crest factor, in particular, is a useful indicator of non-linear loads and power supply stress that standard voltage monitoring alone would miss. Having this data available remotely allows AV technicians to identify deteriorating power conditions before they cause equipment failures.
How do the controllable DC outputs work?
Two of the three DC output banks are independently switchable via the network management interface. This allows remote power cycling of connected DC-powered devices such as camera encoders, display controllers, or codec accessories without requiring physical access to the room.
Does the SQUID require a dedicated IT network port with special configuration?
The SQUID supports 802.1x port-level authentication, which means it can authenticate against an enterprise RADIUS server and connect to managed network infrastructure without requiring an unmanaged or open network port. It also supports VLAN tagging in environments where AV and data networks are separated.
Is the SQUID suitable for international deployments?
Yes. The universal 120V–240V AC input via IEC connectors makes the SQUID compatible with commercial electrical systems worldwide, including both North American 120V and European/international 240V installations.
