The Shure RK311 is a foam windscreen for the SM81 cardioid condenser instrument microphone, attenuating wind and breath noise during live performance, broadcast, and overhead instrument miking applications. The RK311 reduces low-frequency wind artifacts without significantly affecting the SM81’s extended high-frequency response.

The SM81’s flat frequency response and wide dynamic range make it sensitive to airflow noise in outdoor and ventilated environments. The RK311 foam windscreen slips over the SM81 capsule assembly to attenuate wind and HVAC-induced noise during sessions where mic stand positioning near air vents or outdoor environments is unavoidable. It is also useful when the SM81 is used as a boundary or overhead microphone in spaces with overhead HVAC.
