Product Overview
The Shure KSM8/N is a Dualdyne dynamic handheld vocal microphone in a nickel finish, built for accurate vocal reproduction and reliable sound reinforcement on stage. As the world's first dual-diaphragm dynamic handheld microphone, it delivers a nearly flat, condenser-like response with the purest cardioid pattern Shure has developed. For live sound and house of worship vocal capture, this handheld dynamic microphone combines controlled proximity effect with excellent gain before feedback.
Product Description
The KSM8/N is engineered around the patented Dualdyne cartridge, which uses two ultra-thin diaphragms—one active and one passive—and an inverted airflow system. Sound enters through side-entry inlets and passes the rear diaphragm before reaching the front diaphragm, partially blocking low frequencies in the resistance network to produce a natural low-end response with controlled proximity effect and no loss of clarity. The result is a frequency response that is nearly flat, much like a condenser, with the purest cardioid polar pattern in the Shure lineup for consistent on-axis performance regardless of microphone technique. A re-imagined Pumping Pneumatic Shock Mount with tuned cavities delivers strong handling-noise rejection without sacrificing low-frequency response, and a dent-resistant hardened carbon-steel grille lined with hydrophobic woven fabric provides plosive, wind, and moisture protection. As a dynamic microphone it requires no phantom power and connects through a standard XLR, making it a dependable choice for stage, house of worship, and multi-purpose room sound reinforcement.
Key Features
- Dualdyne Dual-Diaphragm Cartridge — Two diaphragms, one active and one passive, deliver a natural low-end response with controlled proximity effect and no loss of clarity.
- Purest Cardioid Pattern — The most consistent cardioid pattern in the Shure lineup provides reliable on-axis performance regardless of how the performer holds the microphone.
- Nearly Flat Frequency Response — A condenser-like, nearly flat response reproduces vocals accurately for transparent sound reinforcement.
- Pumping Pneumatic Shock Mount — Tuned cavities and precise components reject handling noise without reducing low-frequency response.
- Hardened Carbon-Steel Grille — A dent-resistant grille lined with hydrophobic woven fabric provides plosive, wind, and moisture protection.
- Dynamic Design, No Phantom Power — The dynamic capsule requires no phantom power and connects through a standard XLR for simple integration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the KSM8/N require phantom power?
No. It is a dynamic microphone and operates through a standard XLR with no phantom power required.
What makes the Dualdyne cartridge different?
It uses two diaphragms, one active and one passive, to control proximity effect and deliver a nearly flat, condenser-like response while remaining a rugged dynamic microphone.
Why does the pure cardioid pattern matter for live use?
A consistent cardioid pattern maintains on-axis tone regardless of how the vocalist handles the microphone, improving gain before feedback and predictability for the mix engineer.
Is it durable for touring and installed use?
Yes. The hardened carbon-steel grille and hydrophobic lining resist dents, wind, plosives, and moisture.
