A wireless presentation receiver, a compact camera, a room sensor, or a network appliance has no bracket pattern and is light enough that installers leave it sitting on a shelf, where it gets moved, unplugged, or buried behind other equipment. A 7 x 5 in platform gives each such device a fixed home without consuming the surface area a larger shelf would.

The 24 in post places the platform just above the cabinet line, keeping line-of-sight devices such as sensors and compact cameras unobstructed.
