The extra depth separates this size from the 27 x 8 in shelf. Appliances that are deep as well as wide — larger codecs, DSP chassis, and full-size conferencing soundbars — overhang an 8 in platform, putting load at the shelf edge and leaving rear connectors unsupported. At 9 in deep the device sits fully on the platform with its connector field clear of the edge.
