What is the RDL RU-AFC2?
The RDL RU-AFC2 is a stereo, bi-directional audio format converter that interfaces consumer -10 dBV equipment with professional +4 dBu balanced systems in both directions. One module converts a consumer device's stereo output up to balanced levels and feeds its stereo input from a balanced source. Front-panel RCA and XLR jacks plus rear terminal blocks make it a practical rack interface for media players, PCs and recorders.
How does it work?

The unbalanced-to-balanced section accepts left and right RCA inputs and delivers +4 dBu balanced outputs on front-panel XLR jacks and rear detachable terminal blocks. It also provides a mono summed output on a rear terminal block, wired balanced or unbalanced, for patch bays, powered monitors or subwoofer amplifiers. The balanced-to-unbalanced section accepts XLR or terminal block inputs and delivers -10 dBV outputs on front-panel RCA jacks. A rear-panel ground-lift switch connects the XLR output shields to the case, which helps resolve ground loops. Each output channel has a front-panel multi-turn level trimmer and a dual-LED VU meter whose red LED flashes at the calibrated level. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 150 kHz (±0.25 dB) with more than 20 dB of headroom in both sections. The module operates from ground-referenced 24 Vdc at 60 mA idle and 100 mA maximum; RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international) power supply, not included. Mount it with the RC-1UR 1RU rack chassis, RU-HRA1 10.4-inch rack mount or RU-SMA1 surface mounting plate.
What are the key features?
- Bi-directional conversion — One module converts consumer outputs to balanced and balanced outputs to consumer levels.
- Summed mono output — An extra mono output feeds patch bays, monitors or subwoofer amplifiers.
- XLR and terminal block connections — Balanced audio is available on front XLR jacks and rear detachable terminal blocks.
- Ground-lift switch — A rear-panel switch lifts the XLR output shields to address ground loops.
- Per-channel metering and trim — Dual-LED VU meters and multi-turn trimmers set each output precisely.
- Wide frequency response — Response runs 10 Hz to 150 kHz (±0.25 dB) with more than 20 dB headroom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the RU-AFC2 convert in both directions?
Yes. It has separate unbalanced-to-balanced and balanced-to-unbalanced stereo sections that work at the same time.
What is the mono output used for?
It provides a summed mono signal for patch-bay jacks, powered monitors or subwoofer amplifiers.
Can it help with ground loop hum?
A rear-panel ground-lift switch disconnects the XLR output shields from the case, which can help resolve ground loops.
Is a power supply included?
No. It needs ground-referenced 24 Vdc; RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international) power supply, not included.
How is it mounted?
Use RDL RACK-UP accessories such as the RC-1UR 1RU rack chassis, RU-HRA1 10.4-inch rack mount or RU-SMA1 surface mounting plate.
