What is the RDL HR-MCP2?
The RDL HR-MCP2 is a two-channel microphone compressor that holds output levels consistent over input variations of up to 25 dB. Each channel can work as an in-line mic-level compressor or as a microphone preamplifier with compression and line-level output. It suits broadcast studios, voice-over rooms, public address systems, meeting rooms and commercial sound systems where talkers vary widely in level.
How does it work?

The HR-MCP2 installs between a microphone and a mixer or amplifier mic input, or serves as the microphone preamplifier itself. Rear-panel switches set each output to mic or line level. It works with dynamic and condenser microphones, and a front-panel switch enables 48 V phantom power on both inputs. Gain reduction is nearly instantaneous for expected and severe overloads, and automatic release adjustment keeps compression action nearly inaudible. Each channel has an 80 Hz low-cut filter switch and a 15 dB input pad that raises the maximum input level from +5 dBu to greater than +20 dBu. The gain control adjusts from 20 dB to 60 dB for the line output. A seven-LED meter shows gain reduction in 3 dB steps, and a CLIP LED flashes when a peak is within 1 dB of clipping. Inputs and outputs are balanced on XLR jacks and detachable terminal blocks, and channels can operate as a stereo pair or as two mono channels. The unit runs from 24 Vdc; RDL recommends its PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international) 24 Vdc supply. It operates free-standing on included feet or rack mounts with the HR-RA2 19-inch rack adapter or HR-HRA1 10.4-inch rack chassis.
What are the key features?
- Two compressor channels — Independent channels for dual mono or stereo operation.

- Phantom and pads — Switch-selectable 48 V phantom and 15 dB input pads.
- Gain reduction metering — Seven-LED meter in 3 dB steps plus CLIP indicators per channel.
- Low-cut filter — Switchable 80 Hz low-cut filter on each channel.
Where is it typically used?
- Broadcast and voice-over studios
- Boardrooms and meeting rooms
- Houses of worship

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the HR-MCP2 installed in the signal chain?
Between a microphone and its mixer or amplifier input, or as the microphone preamplifier itself using the line-level output setting.
Does it work with condenser microphones?
Yes. It is compatible with dynamic and condenser microphones and provides switch-selectable 48 V phantom power.
What power does the HR-MCP2 need?
24 Vdc at 200 mA (230 mA with phantom), ground-referenced. RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international).
Can I rack mount it?
Yes. RDL lists rack mounting with optional adapters such as the HR-RA2, or it can sit free-standing on the included feet.
