What is the RDL HR-DSX4?

The RDL HR-DSX4 is a 4 x 1 AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital audio selector that switches between four digital sources with signal reclocking. Each input accepts AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial or optical, or AES-3ID, and the output is switch-selectable with format conversion, at up to 24 bits and 192 kHz. Front-panel buttons or rear-panel remote closures select the source, so it fits both local operation and control-system integration in broadcast and production facilities.

How does it work?

RDL HR-DSX4 4x1 AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital audio selector

Solid-state switching selects one of four inputs, and each input can be fed through an S/PDIF optical jack, an S/PDIF or AES-3ID coaxial phono jack, or an AES/EBU XLR. A rear-panel switch sets the output to AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF optical or AES-3ID, enabling the matching jack with any required electrical and data format conversion. AES/EBU inputs and output are 110 Ω and transformer isolated, while S/PDIF coaxial and AES-3ID signals use 75 Ω terminated phono jacks. Four keyboard-style front-panel pushbuttons select the source; the LED lights when a valid input is present and flashes when it is not, and pressing the selected button again turns all inputs off. A LOCAL/REMOTE switch hands control to rear-panel terminals, where a momentary or continuous switch or open-collector closure to ground selects each input. When a source is selected, a 50 mA open-collector output can control other equipment or modules. Sure-Lok auto-recovery supervision monitors for latch-up and re-initiates signal lock for stable operation. Power is ground-referenced 24 to 33 Vdc at 50 mA through the terminal block or dc jack; RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or RDL PS-24AX (international) supply. Pair it with the RDL HR-DDA4 distributor to feed multiple destinations, and rack mount it with the HR-RA2 Half-Rack adapter or HR-HRA1 rack mount.

What are the key features?

  • 4 x 1 digital source selection — Switches between four digital audio sources with reclocking.
  • Three jacks per input — Each input accepts AES/EBU XLR, S/PDIF optical or S/PDIF/AES-3ID coaxial.
  • Selectable output format — AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF optical or AES-3ID with format conversion.
  • Up to 24-bit/192 kHz — Supports 32 kHz to 192 kHz at 16 to 24 bits.
  • Local or remote control — Front-panel buttons or rear-panel contact closures select the source.
  • Open-collector output — A 50 mA output signals the selected input to other equipment.
  • Valid-input indication — The input LED flashes if no valid signal is connected.
  • Sure-Lok auto-recovery — Automatic lock recovery keeps switching stable.

Where is it typically used?

  • Broadcast studio
  • House of worship
  • Auditorium

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it be controlled remotely?

Yes. Set the LOCAL/REMOTE switch to REMOTE and select inputs with switches or open-collector closures to ground on the rear-panel terminals.

Can it convert formats?

Yes. The output format is switch-selectable to AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF optical or AES-3ID, with the required conversion.

How do I know an input is valid?

The selected input's LED lights steadily when a valid signal is present and flashes when it is not.

What sample rates does it support?

32 kHz to 192 kHz at 16 to 24 bits, to AES3-2003 and IEC 60958.

How is it powered?

From ground-referenced 24 to 33 Vdc at 50 mA via terminal block or dc jack. RDL recommends the PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international).

What warranty does it carry?

This product is covered by a 7-year RDL warranty. For warranty claims, RMAs or support, contact Creation Networks at (888) 230-3661 or sales@creationnetworks.net.
