What is the RDL HR-DAC1?

The RDL HR-DAC1 is a HALF-RACK digital to analog converter that turns AES/EBU, AES-3ID or S/PDIF digital audio into balanced and unbalanced stereo analog outputs. It supports operation up to 24 bits and 192 kHz and automatically detects a valid source on any of its four inputs. Front-panel gain trims and dual-LED VU meters make it straightforward to set levels in broadcast, production and commercial installations.

How does it work?

RDL HR-DAC1 digital to analog converter

The HR-DAC1 accepts S/PDIF optical, S/PDIF coaxial, AES-3ID or AES/EBU digital audio and selects the valid input automatically. The AES/EBU input is transformer isolated and 110 Ω terminated, while the coaxial and AES-3ID jacks are 75 Ω terminated. A front-panel LOCK LED confirms a valid source with no phase-lock or bit errors, and LEDs indicate 44.1, 48, 96 and 192 kHz sample rates. Sample rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz are supported. RDL's Sure-Lok auto-recovery supervision restores signal lock after latch-up conditions for stable long-term operation. Conversion uses high-speed delta-sigma converters, digital filtering and wideband analog drivers with digitally controlled analog gating. Left and right output levels are adjusted with front-panel knobs while dual-LED VU meters show each channel. Balanced +4 dBu outputs are provided on XLR jacks and a detachable terminal block, and unbalanced -10 dBV outputs on phono jacks. The unit runs from 24 Vdc via the terminal block or dc jack; RDL recommends its PS-24AS (USA) or PS-24AX (international) 24 Vdc supply. Rack mounting is available with the HR-RA2 19-inch rack adapter or HR-HRA1 10.4-inch rack chassis.

What are the key features?

  • Four digital inputs — Accepts AES/EBU, AES-3ID and coaxial or optical S/PDIF with automatic input detection.
  • Up to 24-bit, 192 kHz — Supports sample rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz with rate indicator LEDs.
  • Balanced and unbalanced outputs — Provides +4 dBu on XLR and terminal block plus -10 dBV on phono jacks.
  • Gain trim with VU metering — Front-panel level knobs and dual-LED VU meters for each channel.
  • Sure-Lok auto recovery — Monitors for latch-up and restores digital signal lock automatically.
  • Transformer-isolated AES/EBU input — The AES/EBU XLR input is transformer isolated and 110 Ω terminated.

Where is it typically used?

  • Broadcast and production studios
  • Auditoriums and performance venues
  • Houses of worship
  • Commercial sound systems
  • Training rooms and lecture halls
