What is the RDL FP-DFC2?
The RDL FP-DFC2 is a FLAT-PAK digital audio format converter that connects S/PDIF sources to professional AES/EBU equipment. It accepts phono, BNC or optical S/PDIF inputs, or an AES-3ID signal on the BNC jack, and delivers a transformer-isolated AES/EBU output on an XLR jack. Conversion runs at sample rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz and resolutions from 16 to 24 bits. Exclusive Sure-Lok auto-recovery circuitry keeps the S/PDIF to AES/EBU conversion stable when digital sources are switched or reconnected.
How does it work?

The FP-DFC2 decodes the incoming S/PDIF signal and reassembles it in the AES/EBU format, inserting all header information common to both standards into the output data stream. Three input jacks are provided on the top panel: phono, BNC and optical, and any one of them may be used. The BNC jack can also receive an AES-3ID signal, which makes the converter useful for broadcast and post-production digital audio interfacing. The AES/EBU output connects through an XLR jack and is transformer isolated to help prevent ground-related problems between equipment. Automatic sample rate detection means no switches need to be set when sources change, and a LOCK LED lights when a valid, locked input is being converted. Sure-Lok auto-recovery monitors the most frequent causes of digital latch-up and reinitiates signal lock, a common failure point when consumer and professional digital gear are mixed. Power is 24 Vdc at 30 mA, connected on full-size barrier block terminals or a dc power jack; RDL recommends the RDL PS-24AX supply. A second dc jack on the opposite end panel passes power to additional FLAT-PAK modules, and a power interconnect cable is supplied for daisy-chaining. The FLAT-PAK case screws directly to cabinets or shelves, or mounts in a rack with accessories such as the FP-HRA half-rack mount, FP-RRA 19 in rack adapter or FP-RRB1 rear rack rail kit.
What are the key features?
- S/PDIF to AES/EBU conversion — Connects consumer coaxial or optical digital sources to professional AES/EBU inputs without a separate interface.
- AES-3ID input on BNC — Accepts AES-3ID signals on the BNC jack and converts them to balanced AES/EBU on XLR.
- Sure-Lok auto-recovery — Monitors for latch-up conditions and automatically restores digital signal lock.
- Up to 24-bit/192 kHz — Detects sample rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz automatically and passes 16- to 24-bit audio.
- Transformer-isolated output — The XLR AES/EBU output is transformer isolated to reduce ground-loop issues between systems.
- Flexible FLAT-PAK mounting — Mounts to a cabinet, shelf or equipment rack and daisy-chains power to other FLAT-PAK modules.
Where is it typically used?
- Broadcast studio
- Auditorium
- House of worship
- Multi-purpose room
- Training room

Frequently Asked Questions
Which digital inputs does the FP-DFC2 accept?
It accepts S/PDIF on a phono, BNC or optical jack, and AES-3ID on the BNC jack. Only one input is used at a time.
What sample rates are supported?
The converter detects sample rates automatically from 32 kHz to 192 kHz at 16- to 24-bit resolution.
What does Sure-Lok do?
Sure-Lok auto-recovery monitors the most frequent causes of digital latch-up and reinitiates signal lock, so the output recovers when sources are switched or reconnected.
Is a power supply included?
The FP-DFC2 requires 24 Vdc at 30 mA. RDL recommends the PS-24AX power supply, and one supply can feed several daisy-chained FLAT-PAK modules.
How is it mounted?
The FLAT-PAK case can be screwed to a cabinet or shelf, or rack-mounted with the FP-RRA rack adapter or FP-HRA half-rack mount.
What warranty applies?
This product is covered by a 7-year RDL warranty. For warranty claims, RMAs or support, contact Creation Networks at (888) 230-3661 or sales@creationnetworks.net.
