Product Overview

The QSC PTL-1 Pilot Tone Load is a circuit that provides a 22 kHz impedance “soak” at the end of a 70V or 100V loudspeaker line. Used together with a QSC DataPort amplifier or CXD-Q amplifier and Q-SYS, the PTL-1 becomes a key component in real-time monitoring of each loudspeaker line. It enables Q-SYS Designer to continuously verify loudspeaker line integrity in commercial 70V/100V distributed audio installations.

Product Description

QSC PTL-1 pilot tone load circuit for 70V 100V loudspeaker lines

When a 22 kHz pilot tone — above the range of human hearing and undetectable beneath program material — is transmitted along each loudspeaker line, Q-SYS Designer can detect deviations in impedance at 22 kHz. A significant drop below a pre-determined impedance indicates a short circuit, while a significant rise above a pre-determined impedance indicates an open circuit. Each failure scenario generates time-stamped events in the Q-SYS Event Log and can trigger alert messages when desired. The system designer can choose whether the pilot tone is generated only during scheduled maintenance checks or remains always active for real-time diagnostics on every zone. The PTL-1 fits most plenum-rated 2-gang electrical boxes and is well suited to installations using QSC DataPort amplifiers such as the DCA1622 with DataPort cabling.

Key Features

  • 22 kHz pilot tone loudspeaker line monitoring — Enables impedance-based fault detection on 70V/100V circuits using QSC DataPort or CXD-Q amplifiers with Q-SYS.
  • Short- and open-circuit detection — Impedance drops indicate a short; impedance rises indicate an open, each logged as a time-stamped Q-SYS event with optional alerts.
  • Scheduled or continuous diagnostics — Designer selects maintenance-only checks or always-on real-time monitoring per zone.
  • Ceramic screw-down connector block with fuse protection — Fuse protects the circuit against shorts at the end of the line.
  • Plenum-rated 2-gang fit — Mounts in most plenum-rated multinational-standard 2-gang electrical box types.
