Product Overview
The Panamax MB850 UPS battery backup is an 850VA shelf-mount uninterruptible power supply that provides continuous battery backup and surge protection for AV equipment in locations where a rack-mount form factor is not available or required. Designed for home theater systems, small commercial AV deployments, and any installation where equipment sits on a shelf or credenza rather than in a rack, the MB850 combines battery backup with automatic voltage regulation (AVR), surge protection, and signal-side protection in a single unit. Its LCD display provides real-time visibility into input voltage, output voltage, battery capacity, estimated runtime, and load level.
Product Description
The MB850 provides 9 total outlets: 5 battery-powered and surge-protected rear outlets for equipment that must remain on during a power disruption, and 4 always-on surge-protected outlets for equipment that does not require battery backup. This split configuration allows integrators and end users to prioritize limited battery capacity toward the equipment that matters most — a lamp-based projector that needs to complete its cool-down cycle, a DVR recording in progress, or an AV processor that takes significant time to reboot — while still providing surge protection to secondary gear like subwoofers, power amplifiers, or playback sources.
Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) stabilizes the incoming AC voltage to an appropriate level for optimal equipment performance, eliminating the effects of brownouts and overvoltages on connected gear. During brownout conditions where utility voltage drops but does not fail completely, the AVR circuit boosts voltage back to the correct output level so equipment continues to operate without switching to battery mode. Over-voltage conditions above 140V and under-voltage conditions below 90V trigger a disconnect to protect connected equipment. The simulated sine wave output — rated at 850VA / 510W — is appropriate for most AV equipment including displays, processors, and networking gear.
Signal-side protection covers one LAN/telephone port combination and one coaxial cable/satellite connection, protecting the connected equipment from surges entering via signal lines as well as the AC power path. USB and serial port interfaces allow a connected computer to communicate with the MB850 for auto-shutdown software integration, enabling the MB850 to gracefully shut down a home theater PC or similar device before the battery is exhausted during a long power outage. The front-panel LCD and icon indicators give a clear, at-a-glance status of the UPS operating mode, battery condition, and any fault or overload conditions.
Key Features
- 850VA / 510W UPS Capacity — Provides battery backup for AV equipment during power disruptions.
- 5 Battery-Powered + 4 Surge-Protected Outlets — 9 total outlets allow prioritization of battery backup to critical equipment while still protecting secondary gear.

- LCD Front Panel Display — Shows input voltage, output voltage, AVR status, battery capacity, estimated runtime, and load level in real time.
- Over/Under Voltage Protection — Disconnects at 140V (over) or 90V (under) to protect connected equipment from unsafe voltage conditions.
- USB and Serial Port Interfaces — Enables communication with a connected PC for auto-shutdown software integration during extended outages.
- Signal-Side Protection — Protects 1 LAN/telephone port and 1 coaxial cable/satellite connection from signal-line surges.
- Wiring Fault Indicator — LED illuminates when wiring problems are detected in the connected circuit.
- Resettable Circuit Breaker — Provides overload protection without requiring fuse replacement.
- Shelf-Mount Form Factor — Designed for placement on shelves, credenzas, or inside AV furniture rather than rack installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the battery runtime of the MB850?
The MB850 is rated at 850VA / 510W. Runtime depends on the load connected to the 5 battery-powered outlets. At lighter loads — for example, a network switch and an AV processor drawing 100–150W — runtime will be substantially longer than at maximum load. The LCD display shows estimated remaining runtime in real time so users know how much time remains to perform an orderly shutdown. Consult the MB850 datasheet for runtime curves at specific wattages.
Q: Does the MB850 include power conditioning in addition to battery backup?
Yes. The MB850 includes Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which stabilizes incoming AC voltage to eliminate brownouts and overvoltages without switching to battery. It also includes surge protection on all 9 outlets and signal-side protection for LAN/telephone and coaxial connections. This makes the MB850 a combined UPS and power conditioner, not a battery-only backup device.
Q: Is the MB850 rack-mountable?
No. The MB850 is a shelf-mount unit designed for placement on surfaces, credenzas, or inside AV furniture. It does not include rack ears and is not intended for 19-inch rack installation. For rack-mount UPS capability, see the Panamax MB1500, which is a 2U rack-mount UPS with a higher VA rating and rack ears included.
Q: What is the difference between the 5 battery outlets and the 4 surge-only outlets?
The 5 battery-powered outlets provide continuous power from the internal battery during an outage, allowing connected equipment to keep running. The 4 surge-protected-only outlets provide surge protection and AVR but will lose power along with the utility during an outage. The intention is to connect critical equipment — displays, processors, recorders — to the battery outlets, and secondary gear to the surge-only outlets.
Q: Does the MB850 support projector cool-down protection?
The MB850 does not include the IR output controls found on the Panamax MB1500. For projector cool-down protection via IR command, the MB1500 is the appropriate product. The MB850 does provide battery backup to keep a projector's cooling fan running through the cool-down period if the projector is connected to one of the 5 battery-powered outlets.
Q: Can the MB850 shut down a connected computer during a long outage?
Yes. The MB850 includes USB and serial port interfaces that allow auto-shutdown software to communicate between the UPS and a connected computer. When the battery reaches a low threshold, the software can initiate an orderly shutdown of the connected PC before the battery is exhausted.
