Product Overview
The Meyer Sound Ashby-5C is a self-powered 5-inch in-ceiling loudspeaker engineered for distributed audio systems that require accurate music reproduction and intelligible speech. Built on Meyer Sound's IntelligentDC platform, it pairs onboard amplification and processing with an exceptionally wide 110° conical coverage pattern. Its compact format and high SPL-to-size ratio allow it to outperform in-ceiling loudspeakers of comparable size. This black-finish model includes an onboard attenuator (ATTN) for local level adjustment during commissioning.
Product Description

The Ashby-5C combines onboard Class-D amplification with sophisticated signal processing to deliver the flat frequency and phase response for which Meyer Sound loudspeakers are known. A 0.75-inch metal-dome tweeter is mounted concentrically over a 5-inch cone driver in a coaxial configuration that maximizes the wave-guide surface for even directivity. Balanced audio and 48 V DC power are delivered over a single composite cable from a Meyer Sound MPS IntelligentDC power supply, permitting longer, lighter-gauge cable runs without conduit under NEC Class 2 wiring. The zinc-plated steel back-can is fire-rated for installation in air-handling plenum spaces, and the low-profile perforated steel grille blends discreetly into finished ceilings. When deeper low-frequency extension and higher SPL are required, the Meyer Sound Ashby-8C offers an 8-inch driver on the same IntelligentDC platform, and the full range is available in the Meyer Sound collection. This unit is the black, attenuator-equipped configuration.
Key Features
- Onboard Attenuator — An integrated ATTN control allows local output level adjustment at the loudspeaker during system commissioning.
- Self-Powered Design — Onboard Class-D amplification with a total output power of 440 W peak removes the need for external amplifier channels.
- Coaxial Transducer — A 0.75-inch dome tweeter mounted concentrically over a 5-inch cone driver delivers point-source coherence across the listening area.
- Extra-Wide Coverage — A consistent 110° conical pattern lets fewer loudspeakers cover a larger floor area at even level.
- High SPL-to-Size Ratio — Linear peak SPL reaches 112 dB with 19 dB crest factor (M-noise) from a compact 5-inch enclosure.
- IntelligentDC Power and Audio — Balanced audio and 48 V DC power are delivered over a single composite cable from an MPS power supply, supporting long, light-gauge runs.
- Plenum-Rated Enclosure — The zinc-plated steel back-can is fire-rated to UL 2043 for installation in air-handling ceiling spaces.
- Loop-Through Wiring — A hardwired loop output allows up to three units on one power-supply channel for efficient distributed runs.
Typical Applications
- Huddle rooms, conference rooms, and boardrooms requiring high-quality distributed program and voice
- House of worship spaces and multi-purpose rooms needing wide, even ceiling coverage
- Commercial meeting spaces and training rooms with distributed audio and paging
- Government spaces where intelligible speech is critical

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the ATTN designation mean?
This configuration includes an onboard attenuator that allows the installer to set the output level locally at the loudspeaker, which is useful when balancing zones during commissioning.
Does the Ashby-5C require a separate amplifier?
No. The Ashby-5C is self-powered, but it requires a Meyer Sound MPS-482HP or MPS-488HP IntelligentDC power supply to deliver 48 V DC and balanced audio.
How many Ashby-5C units can one power supply drive?
One MPS-488HP can power up to 24 Ashby-5C loudspeakers (3 per channel), and one MPS-482HP can power up to 6 Ashby-5C loudspeakers.
How does the Ashby-5C compare to the Ashby-8C?
The Ashby-5C uses a 5-inch driver with 110° coverage in a compact enclosure, while the Ashby-8C uses an 8-inch driver with 100° coverage for deeper low end and higher SPL.
