What is the Magewell Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus NDI encoder?
The Magewell Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus is a standalone HDMI to NDI encoder that converts one HDMI source at up to 4096×2160 60p into a full-bandwidth NDI stream on the network. It puts existing laptops, cameras, media players and switchers onto an NDI-based AV-over-IP system with very low latency, while passing the HDMI signal to a local display. For commercial AV integrators it is a plug-and-play way to bring 4K sources into NDI production, lecture capture and distribution systems.
How does the Magewell Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus work?
The encoder accepts HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 and DVI-D at up to 4K60 4:4:4, with a custom EDID so sources output exactly the format the system needs, and passes the signal through to a local display on the HDMI loop-through. It encodes NDI High Bandwidth at up to 4K60 4:2:2 or 1080p at up to 240 fps, with eight channels of HDMI-embedded audio carried in the NDI stream. Output can match the input or be scaled to a custom resolution and frame rate, with deinterlacing and aspect-ratio control, so mixed sources arrive on the network in a consistent format.
Because it is a full-bandwidth NDI encoder, any NDI receiver on the network — NDI Studio Monitor, vMix, OBS, NDI decoders and switchers — can pick up the source directly, and NDI streams can cross network segments. The Mini-DIN-8 port provides tally light and PTZ camera control (VISCA, VISCA UDP, PELCO-P and PELCO-D) over NDI, so a production system can steer a camera through the same encoder. Setup is automatic: the unit detects the input format and takes a DHCP address, and is then managed through its web interface, Magewell Control Hub or HTTP APIs.
For installation the encoder runs on 802.3af PoE or its 5 V supply, mounts with the included L-bracket or a ¼-20 thread, and can be rack mounted with Magewell's 1RU shelf. Magewell publishes a Q-SYS control plugin and Crestron SIMPL+ modules for Pro Convert encoders, so a room control system can monitor and manage the encoder.
What are the key features of the Magewell Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus?
- 4K60 full-bandwidth NDI — Encodes HDMI up to 4096×2160 60p, or 1080p up to 240 fps, as NDI High Bandwidth.
- HDMI loop-through — Passes the 4K60 source to a local display while encoding.
- Very low latency — Suited to live production and real-time AV-over-IP distribution.
- Scaling and frame-rate conversion — Outputs native or custom resolutions so mixed sources match on the network.
- Tally and PTZ control — Drives tally lights and controls PTZ cameras over NDI through the Mini-DIN-8 port.
- PoE powered — Runs from an 802.3af PoE switch port, removing local power at the source.
- Q-SYS and Crestron integration — Magewell provides a Q-SYS plugin, Crestron modules and HTTP APIs.
- NDI 6.3 support — Current NDI version for compatibility with modern NDI tools and devices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this full NDI or NDI HX?
Full-bandwidth NDI High Bandwidth, for very low latency and full image quality on a Gigabit network.
Does it work with Q-SYS?
Yes. Magewell publishes a Q-SYS control plugin for Pro Convert encoders, as well as Crestron SIMPL+ modules and HTTP APIs. See the full Magewell line, including the Pro Convert HDMI TX for 1080p sources.
Can it control PTZ cameras?
Yes. It controls PTZ cameras over NDI using VISCA, VISCA UDP, PELCO-P or PELCO-D through the Mini-DIN-8 port.
Will the local display still work?
Yes. The HDMI loop-through passes the 4K60 source to a local display while the unit encodes.
How much network bandwidth does it need?
Full-bandwidth NDI at 4K60 needs a Gigabit network designed for NDI, with appropriate switch configuration.
How is it powered?
From an 802.3af PoE switch port or the included 5 V adapter.
How is it installed and supported?
Creation Networks designs AV-over-IP networks, installs and programs NDI systems around Magewell encoders, and supports them after handover. Call 888.230.3661 x 200 to plan a system.
