What is the Magewell Ultra Encode HDMI Plus streaming encoder?

The Magewell Ultra Encode HDMI Plus is a compact 4K HDMI streaming encoder and recorder that takes one HDMI source and delivers it as live streams, network video and recorded files without a computer. It encodes H.264, H.265, NDI HX2 and NDI HX3 at up to 4096×2160 30p and streams to up to six destinations at once over RTMPS, SRT, RTSP, HLS, RIST, WHIP and more. In commercial AV systems it is the box that turns a presenter laptop, camera or switcher output into a webcast, a lecture capture recording or an NDI source on the network.

How does the Magewell Ultra Encode HDMI Plus work?

The encoder accepts an HDMI 1.4a or DVI-D source at up to 4K30 with 4:4:4 color, and passes it through to a local display on the HDMI loop-through output so the room screen is unaffected. Audio comes from the HDMI signal (8 channels) or from the 3.5 mm line input, and can be mapped into up to eight AAC streams or a two-channel Opus stream. A main stream and an optional sub stream are encoded at the same time, so one session can feed a high-bitrate 4K platform while another sends a lighter 1080p or 720p version to a second destination. Each streaming session or recording task can use either stream and its own audio stream.

Live streaming supports native YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, WOWZA and Zixi destinations as well as generic RTMP/RTMPS, SRT caller and listener with AES encryption, RTSP, HLS pull and push, MPEG-TS over UDP/RTP, TVU ISSP, RIST and WHIP. Recording runs in parallel to 128 GB of internal storage, a USB drive or NAS shares over NFS or CIFS, in MP4, MOV or TS, with automatic upload to FTP, Google Drive, OneDrive, Panopto or Dropbox. Schedules can start and stop streams and recordings without staff on site.

For installation, the unit runs on 802.3af PoE from the room switch or on its 5 V supply, connects by Gigabit Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and accepts a USB 4G/5G modem for backup connectivity. It is configured through a browser, managed fleet-wide in Magewell Control Hub or Zixi ZEN Master, controlled from a Stream Deck, and exposes an API so a room control system can start and stop streaming from a touch panel.

What are the key features of the Magewell Ultra Encode HDMI Plus?

  • 4K HDMI encoding — Encodes HDMI sources at up to 4096×2160 30p in H.264, H.265, NDI HX2 or NDI HX3.
  • Six simultaneous destinations — Streams to up to six platforms or servers at once over RTMPS, SRT, RTSP, HLS, RIST, WHIP and other protocols.
  • Built-in recording — Records to 128 GB internal storage, USB or NAS in MP4, MOV or TS with automatic cloud and FTP upload.
  • Dual-stream encoding — Produces a main and a sub stream so one source can feed high- and low-bitrate destinations together.
  • HDMI loop-through — Passes the source to a local display so encoding never interrupts the room screen.
  • Flexible audio — Maps 8-channel HDMI audio and line-in audio into up to eight AAC streams or an Opus stream.
  • PoE powered — Runs from an 802.3af PoE switch port, removing a local power supply from the install.
  • Control-system ready — Provides an API, Stream Deck support and Control Hub management for automated, remote operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Ultra Encode HDMI Plus stream to more than one platform at once?
Yes. It streams to up to six destinations simultaneously, with per-protocol limits such as one SRT listener and one RTSP session.

Does it work with Q-SYS, Crestron or other control systems?
Yes. Magewell provides an API for third-party control, so a control processor can start and stop streams and recordings from the room touch panel. It sits alongside the rest of the Magewell line, including the Pro Convert HDMI TX for full-bandwidth NDI.

Can it record and stream at the same time?
Yes. Recording to internal storage, USB or NAS runs alongside live streaming, and recordings can upload automatically to Google Drive, OneDrive, Panopto, Dropbox or FTP.

Does it need a power outlet at the rack?
No. It runs on 802.3af PoE from a network switch; a 5 V adapter is included if PoE isn't available.

Will it interrupt the image on the room display?
No. The HDMI loop-through output passes the source to a local display while the unit encodes.

How is the unit installed and supported?
Creation Networks designs, installs and commissions streaming and lecture capture systems around the Ultra Encode, and supports them after handover. Call 888.230.3661 x 200 to plan a system.
