Product Overview

The Lightware MX2M-AUX-8AUDIO is an eight-port analog audio input/output board for the Lightware MX2M modular matrix family. Each port is individually configurable as either a line-level balanced input or a balanced output, providing integrators with a flexible analog audio bridge within large-scale matrix installations. The board operates within the MX2M Audio Layer, allowing LPCM streams from any video or audio input to be converted to balanced analog output, and analog sources to be routed to any video or audio output in the matrix. Long-tail keywords: Lightware MX2M analog audio board balanced line input output, modular matrix audio expansion card Phoenix connector, MX2M-AUX-8AUDIO configurable input output audio board.

Product Description

The MX2M-AUX-8AUDIO installs into the MX2M-FR24R frame and adds eight independently configurable balanced analog audio ports via 5-pole Phoenix connectors. When configured as outputs, LPCM audio routed from the Audio Layer is converted to a balanced analog signal — enabling direct connection to professional audio amplifiers, DSP systems, or analog mixers without an external audio interface. When configured as inputs, analog signals are ingested into the Audio Layer and can be embedded into any video output or sent to other audio destinations within the matrix. Volume, gain, and balance are all adjustable per port in software, with a frequency response covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a THD+Noise spec of -70 dB at -1 dBFS. The board is hot-swappable, allowing replacement in operating MX2M frames without interrupting active routing on other boards. Passive cooling means no additional noise contribution in the equipment rack. The board supports 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz sampling frequencies on the output side, and operates at 48 kHz on the input side.

Key Features

  • 8 Configurable Analog Ports — Each of the eight 5-pole Phoenix ports is individually set as a balanced line input or balanced line output via software.
  • MX2M Audio Layer Integration — LPCM streams from any video or audio source can be routed to analog outputs; analog inputs feed directly into the Audio Layer.
  • Adjustable Per-Port DSP — Volume (-95 to 0 dB output; -78 to 0 dB input), gain (-12 to +6 dB), and balance (-100 to +100) configurable per port.
  • Channel Selection — Specify which two audio channels in a LPCM stream to extract and output on each port.
  • Professional Audio Specs — +4 dBu nominal level, 83 dB interchannel isolation, THD+Noise -70 dB @-1 dBFS, 20 Hz–20 kHz response.
  • Multiple Output Sample Rates — Supports 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz on output ports; 48 kHz on input ports.
  • Hot-Swap Support — Install or replace without powering down the MX2M frame.
  • Passive Cooling — No fan, no noise contribution from the board itself.
  • Balanced Signal Connection — Eliminates ground loop and noise issues across long cable runs to external audio equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a single port be used as both an input and output simultaneously?
No. Each port is configured as either an input or an output in software, but the configuration can be changed at any time without hardware modification.
What audio formats can be routed to the analog outputs?
Only LPCM (2-channel PCM) can be converted to analog output. Compressed formats like Dolby Digital or DTS must be decoded upstream before being routed to an analog port.
Which two channels of a multichannel LPCM stream can be selected for output?
The software allows selection of any two channels from the incoming LPCM stream for each output port, giving integrators flexibility for stereo downmix or zone audio routing.
Is the board compatible with unbalanced audio signals?
Yes. Unbalanced signals can be connected using a standard wiring configuration on the 5-pole Phoenix connector, though balanced wiring is recommended for noise immunity over longer cable runs.
Does replacing the board interrupt audio on other boards in the frame?
No. The hot-swap design allows the MX2M-AUX-8AUDIO to be removed or installed while the frame is operating, with no disruption to other installed boards.
