Product Overview

The Lightware MX-HDMI-3D-OB-A is an eight-port HDMI 1.4a output board for the Lightware MX series modular matrix routers, providing eight HDMI outputs with DVI compatibility, HDCP compliance, and full 3D format support including frame packing, side-by-side, and top-bottom. Supporting resolutions up to 4096x2160, this output board is designed for high-channel-count distribution systems in broadcast studios, auditoriums, and large venue installations where the MX-FR modular matrix frame provides the switching fabric. The “-A” suffix designates the audio variant, which includes both digital S/PDIF and analog stereo connectors for local audio de-embedding at each output position. Available from Creation Networks for MX-FR frame expansions.

Product Description

The MX-HDMI-3D-OB-A provides eight HDMI 1.4a output connectors that accept routed video from the MX-FR matrix crosspoint. Each output port supports DVI and HDCP-encrypted signals in addition to standard HDMI, and all 3D signal formats defined by the HDMI specification are passed transparently. The board’s audio option adds S/PDIF digital and Phoenix analog stereo connectors for audio de-embedding at each card position, allowing audio to be extracted for local amplification or DSP processing without a separate audio matrix.

Lightware MX-HDMI-3D-OB-A MX Series HDMI Output Board with Audio

Professional AV features integrated on-board include HDCP enable/disable mode for each output, Pixel Accurate Reclocking to remove jitter at the output stage, Advanced EDID Management for forcing display resolution from the matrix, and Frame Detector for signal presence and format monitoring. The board operates within the MX-FR frame’s power and cooling infrastructure and connects to the frame backplane for signal routing. Analog audio output controls include per-channel volume (-78 to 0 dB), bass (0 to 24 dB), treble (0 to 6 dB), balance, phase invert, and de-emphasis. Available from Creation Networks as a board-level expansion for existing MX-FR frames.

Key Features

  • 8x HDMI 1.4a Outputs — Eight independent HDMI output connectors per board, compatible with DVI and HDCP-encrypted signal paths.
  • Full 3D Format Support — Passes frame packing, side-by-side, and top-bottom 3D signal formats across all eight outputs.
  • Up to 4096x2160 Resolution — Supports 4K resolutions within the HDMI 1.4a bandwidth for large-format display applications.
  • S/PDIF and Analog Audio De-embedding — Per-board digital S/PDIF and balanced analog Phoenix connectors for local audio extraction at each output.
  • Pixel Accurate Reclocking — Removes jitter and skew at the output stage, ensuring stable signal delivery to displays.
  • Advanced EDID Management — Forces display resolution from the matrix; prevents sources from negotiating with downstream displays.
  • HDCP Enable/Disable per Output — Flexible HDCP management for mixed protected and unprotected display environments.
  • Frame Detector — On-board signal presence and format monitoring for each output port.
  • Full Analog Audio Control — Independent volume, bass, treble, balance, phase invert, and de-emphasis per output channel.
  • MX-FR Frame Compatible — Installs directly into Lightware MX-FR9, FR17, FR33, FR65, and FR80 matrix frames.

Typical Applications

  • Broadcast studio multi-output HDMI distribution from MX-FR matrix
  • Auditorium and large venue multi-display routing
  • Boardroom and conference room high-channel-count output infrastructure
  • House of worship multi-screen video distribution
  • Government and operations center display output systems

Frequently Asked Questions

What MX-FR frame sizes accept the MX-HDMI-3D-OB-A?
The board is compatible with all MX-FR series frames: MX-FR9, MX-FR9R, MX-FR17, MX-FR17R, MX-FR33L, MX-FR33R, MX-FR65R, and MX-FR80R. Contact Creation Networks for slot counts and frame capacity planning.
What does the “-A” suffix mean?
The “-A” suffix indicates the audio variant of the MX-HDMI-3D-OB board. It includes S/PDIF and analog Phoenix audio connectors for de-embedding at each card position. The version without “-A” does not include these audio connectors.
Can each HDMI output carry a different source?
Yes. Each of the eight outputs on the board is independently routed by the MX-FR matrix crosspoint. Any input in the system can be routed to any output, including all eight outputs on this board simultaneously showing different sources.
What is Pixel Accurate Reclocking and why does it matter?
Pixel Accurate Reclocking is a Lightware technology that removes timing jitter and channel-to-channel skew from the HDMI signal before it reaches the display. This is particularly important in systems with many cascaded signal processing stages, where accumulated jitter can cause display instability.
Does the analog audio output require an external amplifier?
Yes. The balanced analog stereo output (via Phoenix connector) provides a line-level signal. An external amplifier or powered speaker system is required to produce audible output.
Is the board backward compatible with older HDMI sources?
Yes. The board is HDMI 1.4a and DVI compatible. HDMI 1.0 through 1.4 sources are supported. HDMI 2.0 sources are downconverted to HDMI 1.4a bandwidth; for full HDMI 2.0 output, the MX2M platform with MX2M-4HDMI20-OB boards is recommended.
