Product Overview

The Kramer KDS-8 is a zero-latency 4K@60Hz (4:4:4) SDVoE video streaming transceiver for AV-over-IP distribution over a 10G copper Ethernet network, deployable as either an encoder or decoder in the same unit. AV system designers and integrators use the KDS-8 to build scalable, software-defined AV matrix systems — including video walls, multiviewers, and point-to-multipoint distribution — over standard network infrastructure without dedicated coax or HDMI cabling. It supports HDCP 2.2, HDR, and full 4:4:4 chroma, making it suitable for 4K content distribution in corporate, education, and broadcast environments. The KDS-8 is fully SDVoE-compliant, ensuring interoperability with other SDVoE-certified hardware and software platforms.

Product Description

The KDS-8 encodes an HDMI input signal — along with IR, RS-232, and analog audio — and streams it over a 10G IP network to any number of decoder units. In decoder mode, it receives the encoded stream and outputs HDMI to a connected display. This bidirectional flexibility means a single unit serves as either a transmitter or receiver, simplifying inventory management for integrators. The SDVoE codec delivers lossless compression with zero perceptible latency, critical for interactive applications such as digital signage with touch overlay, video conferencing, and live event production. Genlock and Fastswitch modes minimize switching disruption in multi-source environments. The KDS-8 works with a 10G managed network switch supporting multicast, jumbo frames, and IGMP snooping — and the optional KDS-8-MNGR management appliance adds virtual matrix routing, video wall, and multiviewer configuration via a central web interface. Analog audio embedding and de-embedding allow integration with room audio systems independently of the HDMI stream. Bidirectional IR and RS-232 over IP extend device control to the far end of the network link without separate control cabling.

Key Features

  • Zero-Latency 4K SDVoE Streaming — Streams 4K@60Hz (4:4:4) with lossless compression over 10G Ethernet with no perceptible latency.
  • Encoder/Decoder in One Unit — Field-configurable as either encoder or decoder, reducing SKU complexity for integrators.
  • SDVoE-Compliant Codec — Interoperable with other SDVoE-certified hardware and software AV-over-IP platforms.
  • HDCP 2.2 and HDR Support — Handles protected 4K HDR content from premium HDMI sources.
  • Genlock and Fastswitch Modes — Reduces switching artifacts in multi-source presentation and live event environments.
  • Bidirectional IR and RS-232 over IP — Extends device control to the remote display or source without separate control infrastructure.
  • Analog Audio Embedding — Unbalanced analog audio port embeds room audio into the streaming signal independently of HDMI audio.
  • Video Wall and Multiviewer Support — With KDS-8-MNGR (sold separately), supports virtual matrix, video wall, and multiview configurations.
  • 10G Network Interface — Requires managed 10G switch with multicast, jumbo frames, and IGMP snooping for full SDVoE operation.

Typical Applications

  • Corporate conference room and boardroom AV-over-IP distribution
  • University and campus-wide 4K video distribution
  • Digital signage networks over structured cabling infrastructure
  • Broadcast studio and live event production AV routing
  • Government and command center video wall systems
  • Training room and all-hands room multi-display installations

Frequently Asked Questions

What network switch does the KDS-8 require?

The KDS-8 requires a managed 10G Ethernet switch with support for multicast routing, jumbo frames, IGMP snooping, and fast leave. Standard unmanaged or 1G switches are not sufficient for SDVoE operation. Consult your network team or Creation Networks at https://creationnetworks.net for switch selection guidance.

Does the KDS-8 require the KDS-8-MNGR to function?

No. Without the KDS-8-MNGR, KDS-8 units operate in point-to-point encoder/decoder pairs. The KDS-8-MNGR (sold separately) adds centralized management, virtual matrix routing, video wall configuration, and multiviewer modes across multiple units.

Can the KDS-8 operate as both encoder and decoder?

Yes. Each unit is field-configurable as either encoder or decoder via the front panel or OSD menu, so a single SKU serves both roles in an installation.

Is the KDS-8 compatible with other SDVoE products?

Yes. The KDS-8 uses a fully standard SDVoE-compliant codec, enabling interoperability with other SDVoE-certified hardware and software AV-over-IP platforms from participating manufacturers.

What is the maximum number of KDS-8 units that can be deployed together?

The KDS-8 system scales with the network infrastructure. The KDS-8-MNGR supports management of multiple encoder/decoder units within the same network. Contact Creation Networks at https://creationnetworks.net for large-scale deployment design assistance.
