Product Overview

The NETGEAR GS316EP is a 16-port Gigabit Ethernet Plus (smart-managed) switch with 15 802.3at PoE+ ports, one SFP fiber uplink, and a 180W power budget. It pairs plug-and-play simplicity with smart-managed features such as VLANs, QoS, and PoE scheduling for mid-sized commercial AV deployments. The fanless metal enclosure runs silently, making it suitable for conference rooms, training rooms, and house of worship installations. A browser-based GUI handles all configuration.

Product Description

The GS316EP 16-port Gigabit PoE+ Plus switch is built for AV integrators powering a larger population of edge devices from a single point. Fifteen Gigabit ports deliver 802.3at PoE+ at up to 30W each from a shared 180W budget, while a dedicated SFP slot provides a fiber uplink to the network core. Smart-managed features include IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging, 802.1p and DSCP QoS, IGMP snooping, port mirroring, loop prevention, and per-port PoE scheduling, all configurable through a business-friendly web GUI. Uninterrupted PoE keeps powered devices online during firmware updates and reboots.

The fanless metal chassis operates at 0 dBA and is desktop or wall-mountable, so it can be placed in occupied rooms without acoustic disruption. Non-blocking switching provides 32 Gbps of fabric bandwidth with a 4K MAC address table and support for up to 64 VLANs, enough to segment AV, voice, control, and data traffic across a busy meeting space or worship facility. QoS prioritization protects time-sensitive audio and video streams, and the SFP uplink allows long fiber runs back to a distribution switch. For multi-room rollouts, the GS316EP standardizes cleanly with the broader NETGEAR switch collection. PoE scheduling can also power down access points or signage outside operating hours to save energy.

Key Features

  • 15 PoE+ Ports (802.3at) — Delivers up to 30W per port to access points, cameras, and PoE displays.
  • 180W Total PoE Budget — Powers a substantial cluster of edge devices from one switch.
  • SFP Fiber Uplink — One dedicated SFP slot supports long fiber runs to the network core.
  • VLAN Segmentation — Up to 64 IEEE 802.1Q VLANs isolate AV, voice, control, and data traffic.
  • QoS Traffic Prioritization — 802.1p and DSCP support protects audio and video streams.
  • PoE Scheduling — Powers devices down on a schedule to conserve energy outside operating hours.
  • Uninterrupted PoE — Maintains device power through firmware updates and reboots.
  • Fanless Silent Operation — Runs at 0 dBA for placement in occupied rooms.
  • Non-Blocking 32 Gbps Switching — Full Gigabit throughput across all 16 ports.

Typical Applications

  • Conference rooms powering ceiling access points, cameras, and PoE displays from a single switch
  • Training rooms with multiple powered endpoints and a fiber uplink to the building core
  • House of worship installations distributing PoE to cameras and wireless coverage across a large hall
  • Commercial meeting spaces consolidating AV, voice, and control traffic on segmented VLANs
  • Multi-purpose rooms requiring flexible PoE power for reconfigurable AV layouts

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GS316EP compatible with 802.3af devices?
Yes. The PoE+ (802.3at) ports are backward compatible with lower-power 802.3af devices such as basic VoIP phones and entry-level access points, drawing only the power each device requires.

Can it power Wi-Fi 6 access points and PTZ cameras?
Yes, within the 180W shared budget. Each port supplies up to 30W, which covers most 802.3at access points and PTZ cameras, but total simultaneous draw across all powered ports must stay within 180W.

How is the switch managed?
The GS316EP is a Plus (smart-managed) switch configured through a browser-based GUI. There is no command line; VLANs, QoS, and PoE scheduling are set from a web interface, which suits AV integrators who do not require full enterprise management.

What does the SFP port support?
The single SFP slot accepts NETGEAR 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX, or 1000BASE-T copper transceivers for a fiber or copper uplink to the network core.

Can I rack-mount this switch?
The GS316EP ships with a wall-mount kit and is designed for desktop or wall mounting. For a 19-inch rack, a third-party shelf or bracket is required, since a dedicated rack kit is not included.

What warranty and support are included?
The switch carries a 5-year hardware warranty along with 90 days of free technical support from the date of purchase, with extended support plans available.
