Product Description

Extron DXP 168 HD 4K PLUS 16x8 4K/60 HDMI matrix switcher front and rear view

The Extron DXP 168 HD 4K PLUS is a 16x8 4K/60 HDMI matrix switcher built for high-performance signal distribution in commercial AV installations. It routes any of 16 HDMI inputs to any of 8 HDMI outputs at resolutions up to 4096x2160 at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 chroma sampling, and supports HDMI 2.0b features including data rates to 18 Gbps, HDR, Deep Color up to 12-bit, 3D, HD lossless audio formats, and CEC. As an HDCP 2.3-compliant matrix switcher, it incorporates Extron SpeedSwitch, EDID Minder, and Key Minder technologies, along with HDMI input equalization and output regeneration, to maintain reliable operation across a fully digital signal path.

This model is well suited to conference rooms, divisible meeting rooms, lecture halls, briefing rooms, simulation labs, and centralized control rooms that drive multiple displays. Designed for use with 4K graphics cards, 4K media players, 4K Blu-ray players, and 4K native displays, the switcher applies automatic cable equalization on inputs and output reclocking to preserve signal integrity. When paired with Extron Pro Series High Speed HDMI cables, 4K/60 signals are equalized to 35 feet (10.7 meters), reducing the need for additional signal conditioning on longer cable runs. Each HDMI output also provides +5 VDC at 250 mA for powering peripheral devices.

The DXP 168 HD 4K PLUS pairs video routing with four analog stereo audio outputs and S/PDIF outputs. Built-in audio de-embedders extract embedded HDMI audio and assign it to discrete digital or analog outputs, eliminating external HDMI audio extraction products and reducing the number of boxes in the rack. Key Features

  • 16x8 4K/60 HDMI matrix switching — Routes any of 16 HDMI inputs to any of 8 outputs at resolutions up to 4096x2160 at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 color, supporting demanding 4K source-to-display distribution.
  • HDMI 2.0b support up to 18 Gbps — Carries HDR, Deep Color up to 12-bit, 3D, HD lossless audio, and CEC so the switcher keeps pace with current 4K source and display equipment.
  • HDCP 2.3 compliance — Ensures protected content displays correctly and interoperates with other HDCP-compliant devices in the signal chain.
  • Audio de-embedding to analog and S/PDIF — Extracts embedded HDMI audio to four stereo analog outputs and S/PDIF outputs, letting integrators feed the local audio system without separate extraction hardware.
  • SpeedSwitch and Key Minder technologies — Deliver fast, reliable switching of HDCP-encrypted content while maintaining continuous encryption between source and display devices.
  • EDID Minder management — Automatically manages EDID communication so all sources power up properly and reliably provide content for display.
  • Automatic input equalization and output reclocking — Conditions incoming HDMI signals and restores output timing, enabling longer cable runs while preserving image quality.
  • Ethernet and RS-232 control — Allows the switcher to be monitored, managed, and integrated into a control system over a LAN, WAN, or serial connection using Extron SIS commands.
  • Global presets and rooming — Stores frequently used I/O configurations and groups outputs into discrete rooms, simplifying operation in larger and divisible-room systems.
  • 2U rack-mount enclosure — Installs in a standard equipment rack with built-in brackets and an internal universal power supply for straightforward integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sources and displays is the DXP 168 HD 4K PLUS compatible with?

It supports any HDMI 2.0 source and display, including 4K graphics cards, 4K media players, 4K Blu-ray players, and 4K native displays, at resolutions up to 4096x2160 at 60 Hz with 4:4:4 color. DVI sources and displays are supported with appropriate DVI-D to HDMI cables or adapters.

How does this switcher handle audio in an AV system?

Built-in de-embedders extract embedded HDMI audio and route it to four discrete stereo analog outputs and S/PDIF outputs, so you can feed a local DSP or amplifier without adding external HDMI audio extraction hardware. Embedded audio also passes through with its corresponding video to any selected HDMI output.

Can it be integrated with a third-party control system?

Yes. The switcher provides Ethernet and RS-232 control and uses Extron's Simple Instruction Set (SIS) command protocol, allowing integration with most major control systems. Global presets and rooming let you store and recall I/O configurations for divisible-room operation.

How is it mounted and powered?

The DXP 168 HD 4K PLUS ships in a 2U full-rack-width metal enclosure with built-in rack brackets and an internal 100-240 VAC universal power supply, making it straightforward to install in a standard equipment rack.

What warranty and support are included?

The unit carries a 3-year parts and labor warranty, and the Extron Everlast power supply is covered by a 7-year parts and labor warranty. A TAA-compliant version and a DoDIN APL approved version are available on request for government and defense projects.
