Product Overview

The DBX ZonePRO 640 is a 6-input, 4-output rack-mount digital zone processor designed for commercial audio distribution in small-to-medium multi-zone installations. This dbx zone processor for conference rooms, boardrooms, and training rooms delivers flexible signal routing and full DSP processing — including Advanced Feedback Suppression (AFS), AutoWarmth, parametric EQ, compression, noise gate, source ducking, and priority override — alongside RS-232 control and wall panel Zone Controller support for end-user zone management. The 640 provides the signal processing depth required for installations where two mic/line inputs need to coexist with four RCA background music sources across up to four independent output zones.

Product Description

The ZonePRO 640 accepts 6 inputs: two switchable mic/line Euroblock balanced inputs and four unbalanced RCA source inputs. The two mic/line inputs feed a built-in preamp with 30–60 dB of gain range, 15V phantom power for condenser microphones, and an equivalent input noise floor below -118 dB. Four RCA inputs handle streaming players, satellite receivers, and other consumer audio sources without external level converters, making the 640 a practical choice for background music systems in commercial spaces.

The central routing matrix provides primary source selection across all inputs and outputs, source ducking for paging priority override, and a built-in real-time clock for time-of-day and day-of-week automation. Output processing per zone includes AutoWarmth psychoacoustic bass extension co-developed with JBL, per-zone parametric EQ, bandpass and crossover filters, output limiting, and adjustable delay for loudspeaker alignment. An S/PDIF digital output (RCA, 24-bit oversampling) provides a digital audio feed to compatible downstream equipment. The dbx Type IV conversion system achieves greater than 119 dB A-weighted dynamic range, keeping the signal path clean across all connected zones.

Wall panel Zone Controllers (dbx ZC series) connect for end-user volume and source selection at each zone location. RS-232 control supports third-party integration with AMX, Crestron, and custom control systems. The analog input bus allows multiple ZonePRO units to share sources for scalable multi-zone audio distribution. ZonePRO Designer software provides Wizard-driven commissioning from a connected PC.

Key Features

  • 6 Inputs / 4 Outputs — Two switchable mic/line Euroblock inputs and four RCA unbalanced source inputs feed four independent balanced output zones.
  • Advanced Feedback Suppression (AFS) — Automatically identifies and eliminates feedback frequencies on mic inputs, protecting paging and announcement channels in conference rooms and training rooms.
  • AutoWarmth per Output Zone — Psychoacoustic bass extension co-developed with JBL maintains natural low-frequency response at any listening level in each zone.
  • Parametric EQ and Crossover Filters — Full input and output parametric EQ, bandpass, and crossover filtering enable precise acoustic optimization per zone and loudspeaker system.
  • Source Ducking and Priority Override — Background music levels reduce automatically when paging is activated, ensuring speech intelligibility across all output zones.
  • Real-Time Clock Scheduling — Built-in clock enables time-of-day and day-of-week automation for unmanned commercial installations.
  • S/PDIF Digital Output — RCA 24-bit oversampling digital output provides a digital audio feed to compatible downstream devices.
  • RS-232 Control — Serial control supports third-party integration with AMX, Crestron, and custom control processors.
  • Wall Panel Zone Controllers — Compatible with the full range of dbx ZC wall panels for occupant-level source selection and volume control.
  • Analog Input Bus — Links multiple ZonePRO units for scalable multi-zone distribution without duplicating source cabling.
  • Security Lockout — Prevents unauthorized front-panel changes in permanently installed commercial spaces.
  • UL/IEC/EN Certified — Meets UL 600065, IEC 60065, and EN 55013 for commercial installation compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the DBX 640 and the DBX 640M?
The 640 uses a more open, flexible DSP architecture suited for installations managed entirely through ZonePRO Designer software. The 640M adds front-panel LCD metering, six-segment lightpipe output meters, hardware mic gain control per channel, user-assignable front-panel controls, and a link bus for system expansion. Choose the 640 for software-managed installations; choose the 640M when front-panel visibility or link bus expansion is required.
Q: Does the DBX 640 support Crestron or AMX control?
Yes. The 640 supports RS-232 control. DBX provides native Crestron and AMX control modules as free downloads from dbxpro.com, and a ZonePro Protocol Guide is available for custom integration.
Q: How many output zones does the DBX 640 support?
The 640 provides 4 independent output zones. For larger installations, the analog input bus allows multiple ZonePRO units to share sources and expand zone count without duplicating source cabling.
Q: Does the DBX 640 include a digital output?
Yes. The 640 includes an RCA S/PDIF digital output (24-bit oversampling) providing a digital audio feed with greater than 114 dB A-weighted dynamic range to compatible downstream equipment.
Q: What software configures the DBX 640?
ZonePRO Designer (free download from dbxpro.com) configures all signal routing, DSP parameters, zone assignments, and scheduling via RS-232. A Wizard-driven workflow guides integrators through the full setup process.
Q: Where can I purchase the DBX 640?
The DBX ZonePRO 640 is available at creationnetworks.net, a commercial AV specialist with pre-sales technical support.
