The DBX 510 is a 500-series subharmonic synthesizer that generates synthetic sub-bass content one and two octaves below the fundamental frequencies present in the input signal, providing controllable low-frequency enhancement for music production, DJ monitoring, sound reinforcement, and broadcast applications in a single module slot. Based on dbx's patented subharmonic synthesis technology, the 510 analyzes the input signal and generates new sub-bass content at 24-80 Hz and 36-56 Hz simultaneously, adding low-frequency weight and impact to program material that lacks it without requiring physical acoustic space to generate the effect. Independent level controls for each synthesized sub-bass band allow precise management of the enhancement.

The DBX 510 subharmonic synthesizer processes incoming audio and generates two independent bands of synthesized sub-bass content: one band operating from 24 Hz to 80 Hz (Sub Harmonics) and a second band from 36 Hz to 56 Hz (Sub 2), with independent level controls for each band. The Sub Harmonics control generates content one octave below the fundamental frequencies detected in the input signal, while the Sub 2 control generates content at approximately one and a half to two octaves below the detected fundamentals, creating a layered sub-bass enhancement that adds both low-mid warmth and deep sub-bass impact depending on the level relationship between the two controls.

Unlike a subwoofer crossover or a low-shelf equalizer, the 510 synthesizes new frequency content that was never present in the original recording, allowing the engineer to add sub-bass impact to music tracks, DJ mixes, and broadcast content that were mixed with insufficient low-frequency energy for the playback system in use. The synthesis process analyzes the fundamental frequencies present in the signal and generates harmonically related sub-bass content, maintaining musical relationships between the synthesized content and the original signal.

A front panel output level LED provides signal presence confirmation, and an in/out switch allows instant before/after comparison of the synthesis effect. The 510 operates on +/-16V DC from any standard 500-series power frame and draws only 1.6 watts.
