Product Overview
The DBX 234s is a stereo 2/3-way or mono 4-way active crossover with TRS connectors, providing the same Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB/octave filtering and frequency division capabilities as the 234xs in a 1U rack-mount chassis with 1/4 inch TRS balanced I/O. Designed for sound reinforcement systems that use TRS-standard wiring at the amplifier rack level, the DBX 234s active crossover delivers precise driver band separation for bi-amp, tri-amp, and mono 4-way loudspeaker systems. Available at Creation Networks.
Product Description
The DBX 234s delivers the same crossover processing as the 234xs, with the distinction that all inputs and outputs use 1/4 inch TRS balanced connectors rather than XLR. This makes the 234s appropriate for systems with TRS patch bay infrastructure or where TRS wiring between the processing rack and amplifier rack is standard practice. Stereo 2-way, stereo 3-way, and mono 4-way operating modes are all supported, and the LF sum function combines both channel low-frequency outputs into a single mono subwoofer output for standard stereo-plus-sub configurations. The Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB/octave filter design produces an acoustically flat summed response at the crossover frequency, and all crossover points are continuously variable within their respective frequency ranges. The universal power supply accepts international mains voltages, and the unit occupies 1U in a standard 19-inch rack. Dynamic range exceeds 110 dB at unity gain, and THD+Noise is below 0.01% in passband operation.

Key Features
- Stereo 2/3-Way or Mono 4-Way Operation - Supports stereo bi-amp, tri-amp, and mono 4-way driver management configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the DBX 234s and the DBX 234xs?
- The 234s and 234xs are identical in crossover function, filter type, configuration options, and specifications. The only difference is the connector type: the 234s uses 1/4 inch TRS balanced connectors, and the 234xs uses XLR balanced connectors. Choose based on the connector standard in the target system's amplifier rack and patch infrastructure.
- What operating modes does the DBX 234s support?
- The 234s supports stereo 2-way crossover (two outputs per channel), stereo 3-way crossover (three outputs per channel), and mono 4-way crossover (four outputs from a single summed input). Mode selection determines how the output channels are assigned to frequency bands.
- How does the LF sum function work on the 234s?
- When LF sum is engaged, the low-frequency outputs from the left and right input channels are combined into a single mono subwoofer output. This is the standard configuration for stereo systems with a mono subwoofer or mono sub array, eliminating the need for an external line mixer to combine bass signals before the subwoofer amplifier.
- Why use a Linkwitz-Riley crossover design?
- Linkwitz-Riley filters are aligned to be 6 dB down at the crossover frequency. When the adjacent high-pass and low-pass outputs are combined acoustically, the result is a flat response through the crossover region. This avoids the summation peak that occurs with Butterworth-aligned crossovers and simplifies overall system equalization.
- Is the DBX 234s appropriate for permanent installed sound?
- Yes. The balanced TRS I/O, 1U rack format, and universal power supply make the 234s suitable for permanent installed sound applications in venues that use TRS wiring standards between processing racks and amplifier locations.
- What rack space does the DBX 234s require?
- The 234s occupies 1U of space in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.
